UPENN vs TUFTS???
Started by MDBear3502
Penn has a really great faculty. The only negative thing I can say about the school are the old, basement ridden facilities area. And another caveat about Penn... Philadelphia takes a bit of getting used to.
It's not the right city for everyone, even if you choose to live a little further away from the school in Center City or a surrounding 'burb. It's important to know - this is the city where a few weeks ago, a few teenagers stabbed a homeless man for 35 cents. It's better than Temple's area, but still a very urban weary area at night.

I go to tufts now, and i recently went to visit a friend at Penn, and I am really glad I picked Tufts. Boston isnt the greatest city either, there are a bunch of cities I would rather be in right now, but if you had to pick between the two, I would pick tufts, but I may be biased. I dont know how we compare to other schools, but we're very clinically intense, and traditionally do well on part 1 of the NBDE.

Tufts!!!!!
Tufts!!!!!
Do you go to Tufts?
so someone shouldnt go to a school bc there is crime in the city? all cities have crime. penns area is very safe and they have people patrolling the area to make it safe. being a girl i wouldnt walk alone at night but i dont think thats safe anywhere. during the day though its perfectly fine. like all cities, you just have to be smart about it.
penn is hard but dont let that stop you from coming here. we have a test every week but we find time to go out the night after tests and on the weekends. im hungover right now actually. so dont worry, you can have fun anywhere you go.

Don't twist my words. I never said the original poster should, or shouldn't do anything. I just provided additional background information.
Having lived two blocks away from Locust Walk for 3.5 years, I can say I know the area fairly well. Most Grad students do not live in the patrol zone for Penn Police, and thus crimes do not fall under their jurisdiction. Penn's area can also never be defined as "very safe." If someone told you this at the interview, they lied. They should have given you a copy of the Daily Pennsylvanian instead - their's a campuswide search for a man who has robbed and threatened several women (some in groups) with a screwdriver

I would personally pick Penn over Tufts..
I think its safe enough for a girl to walk alone in Umich though (Ann arbor is SUPER safe.. I was born there and lived there all 21 years)

Of course that doesn't stop someone from living within the jurisdiction of the Penn police or just being plain street smart and making good decisions. As a woman, I never felt unsafe walking around 40th street and west at night, so long as I was with a large group of people. Your saftey is defined a lot by what precautions you take.

There are certain impediments to living around 40th street, slightly east off Locust Walk, and westward beyond 42 (or 43rd, which is beyond the patrol range for Penn police, and also happens to be where most grad students and residents live). Among impediments for some Grad students, is noise. Many houses surrounding the area of 40th up to 42nd off campus frats, or extension houses of frats. There are no physical or contractual roadblocks in place, but culture and atmosphere are certainly factors to consider.
my friend who goes to tufts says he loves it there. my friend who goes to penn says never to go there...there's a mean dean there now.
i dont think our dean is mean? who cares though, you dont see them unless you want to.
