Could anyone tell me how good UPitt is? Their rank is only 18th, however, it seems like lots of people want to apply for it especially for their MSTP. What's their best program? Cardiology (cardiovascular), liver transplant, or something else? 😕

PLEASE let me know.+pissed+

?There rank is only 18th? sound like an indictment. Fortunately this country is blessed with lots of very good schools. Thus some schools would be 18 or 25th. That is not a indication of being mediocre. U of Pitts is a great Medical schools. Lot of these ranking are completely marketing and perception related. Made up by the whims of USnews magazine. I am not saying on a relative basis they may not be accurate. Thus I would look at top 25%. According to US News U of Pitts is higher ranked then Emory, University of Chicago and Northwestern. All great schools, were people would kill them self to get in. Some time we take these ranking too seriously. If you like U of Pitts go for it.

No offense, but I still want to know what department makes UPitt ranking on the top tier med school. 😕

Hey Grignard I gotta tell ya...I don't think you're going to get any answer to your question on this forum. People interested in applying to UPitt MD/PhD probably aren't going due to their interests in liver transplants. Instead, they are rather going due to their basic science research interests (and in most cases this does not include clinically-related cardiology). I'm not personally sure which basic science departments are the most well-regarded at Pitt, but I would guess that its overall "ranking" is a result of the high level of funding, excellent faculty, and overall reputation among other medical schools that it holds (as well as the other whims, biases, and fancies that U.S. News happens to hold as khan mentions). If you are really interested in the science, you can check out publication records of faculty there or ask faculty you know at your school what they think of Pitt's particular programs. If you are interested in things like cardiology, you should probably check out residency rankings.

I know they are strong in neuroscience, if that helps. Their ranking (which is an MD one, not a PhD one) comes from the fact that it is the only major medical facility in Pittsburgh and they are ranked like 7th in the country for research dollars. The medical school also just got a perfect accredidation score. if you wnat information on varioous school's research strengths, maybe check out the rankings for PhD programs...
