I need some ideas on writing my personal statement for medical schools. I have read several places online what things should be included in the personal statement. But I feel I will get a better idea if I see actual personal statements. What do you guys think?

Can anyone please upload their personal statements, just so people can get an idea of what a personal statement looks like, etc.

go to a bookstore or a library. there are tons of books filled with "personal statements that got people accepted to harvard medical school" and whatever.

I would be careful of looking at too many example statements. You'll more than likely end up copying them in format if not style as well.

Just explain why you want to be a physician. If you've thought about it and have plenty of experiences supporting your choice, writing a draft should be easy for you. Everyone has their own opinions of course, but a basic structure is: introduction -> meaningful experiences that impacted your decision -> HOW those experiences impacted your decision -> conclusion.

disagree. everyone's experience is different. it certainly wasn't easy for me. i wrote in another thread about my ridiculous PS-writing method... i'll try to search and post it here if i find it.

Well of course everyone's experience is going to be different, but I think if you've been deliberate in choosing your activities and have given considerable thought into WHY you did the things you did, it will certainly be a help to writing the PS. The PS is going to be difficult if the first time you're thinking about the "why medicine?" question is after you open Word.

not everyone was pre-med since the beginning of college. some of us didn't deliberately choose activities that would help us get into med school-- we did things that we were interested in, and then found that those interests and activities had prepared us well for careers in medicine. having thought about "why medicine" is extremely different than having tried to crystallize it into 5300 characters-- which was difficult for me. i treated my PS as a serious piece of writing, and i'm really proud of it.

👍 I had given plenty of consideration to my activities, and it was still challenging to get everything organized and worded correctly. You also have to balance the level of detail you provide in it with keeping things concise. It was no easy task.
