I don't mean to be the harbinger of bad news, but--at this point, good news comes via phone, and bad news comes in the mail. Don't worry if the news you get now isn't great, they create a hold list of people that they reconsider inviting to interview later in the year.
In terms of what Upstate is looking for, I can't think of anything specific that Upstate wants that another school wouldn't be just as happy to see. All med schools want to see a dedicated, well-adjusted student who has some clinical experience and knows what they are getting into . I realize this isn't extremely helpful to those applying, but I figured I'd throw my 2 cents in anyways.
