How important are upward trends in grades for dental schools? Do they significantly outweigh failures and W's in pre-req courses?

It is pretty important if you've stumbled early one. How much that will be reflected on the applicant varies. To some it could be too little too late, others the early stumble caused them to be squeezed out of the numbers game.

i hope this whole trend thing helps me out! i had a 2.73 from my first school which included most of my intro stuff, but in the last 3 years since transferring and starting my graduate studies i've had a 3.9 (only 2 B's - 4.0 in graduate school 😀). but even this only gives me an over all of 3.31 and a sciGPA of 3.37. i'm def not banking on my GPA to get me in though. i think that my solid DAT and lots of shaddowing/volunteer/college athletics/jobs/honor society stuff will help me out though.

i mentioned that my GPA was not where I would like it to be during my interview at Nova when they asked about my grades (started with a 2.6, finished with a 3.3). they said the consistent upward trend in grades plus an above ave. DAT showed that I was a good student, and I got in. demonstrate that you have matured over time, and that you can buckle down when you need to, and you will be fine.

I'm really hoping it counts. My freshman year gpa was a 2.01. My junior and senior year gpa's were 3.2 each year, but because of freshman and sophmore year my cum. was only a 2.8 when I graduated in May. (science classes at Penn aren't easy...) Needless to say I'm also going to be doing at least another 2 years of postbac classwork before applying.
