NY Resident just got off the waitlist for Lecom Elmira (branch of Lecom ERIE) after already being accepted to Alabama COM. Interested in Psych, Military med, Internal, Gen surg
Both start the same date 7/26

Lecom Elmira
Pros
:
  • Cheaper tuition 40k, (Would have to take out 60k ish/year)
  • Location 4 hours away
  • Closer to support system
Cons:
  • Strict policies, Mandatory lectures, dress codes
  • NO BOARD PASS RATES yet
  • Newer campus established later than acom 2020
  • Only PBL learning (which could be a pro for some)
  • Virtual anatomy lab

ACOM
Pros
:
  • Visited and liked, better vibes
  • Higher board passing
  • Housing on campus
  • less than half mandatory lectures
  • Established earlier 2013
Cons:
  • Location 18 hours away
  • Tuition 60K ( Would have to take out 100k/year)
  • remediation policies, apparently the attrition rates are high but tough to get data on

I guess in conclusion do I want to stay near my support system for cheaper tuition and more strict policies, or attend a more established program with higher boards and match but be 18 hours away from support system at double the tuition. If anyone can tag the goats it would be highly appreciated.

1. Not trying to point you one way or another, but if you’re interested in mil med you can apply for HPSP and tuition will become a non factor.

2. I often take for granted how important my wife and stepdaughter have been since I started med school. I’m lucky that they followed me across the country and school has been less stressful because of them. Don’t underestimate the importance of a support system, but also realize you will have the opportunity to meet new people and build a strong support network with those people regardless of where you go.

Thank you for the feedback, mil med isn't my first choice but I'm def interested. With that noted you're completly right about the HPSP and tuition non factor which is huge. Also I appreciate both outlooks on the support system

Update:
Lecom Cons:
Administration, alot of red flags apparently from current and former students.

Take the cheaper tuition. It’s a branch of LECOM and should be fine. The complaints beyond the strict rules have tended to be about the Bradenton campus.
