I posted this at the pre-allo, but I think I can get more responses here.

I need your advice..

some of you read a previous message from me a few days ago...

[..Didn't really know what I wanted from college, was immature, first in family to attend college, personal and family problems turned into an ugly outcome. Went to college off and on, right now I am 5 classes away from obtaining my B. S. in Public Health.

The Problem? Close to 40 W's from times where I had to drop classes because of family/personal/financial issues. GPA: 2.6 and as mentioned, 6 classes away from graduating with my B. S. in Public Health...]

Now, currently I have a lot of credits, ~190-210 , not too sure.

For the past 2 semesters I have done real well, ~3.97 GPA, so this summer I wanted to take a few classes were I completely did bad years ago and could have done much better:

General Psych. General Soc. are 2 of those classes where I received C's back then, but I know I can get A's now that I am more mature and things are better.

My question is: Should I bother taking these classes, getting the A's since I have so many credits already? There are no other classes I can really take in the summer, but I wanted to take something to show the upward continuous trend with good grades.

Since there is no way I can erase my academic record, I thought of it as starting over again 2 semesters ago and even though I took those classes already, getting As on them will show the other side of me, with the other good grades.

What would you advice?

I feel like I am so screwed up, like its going to take me years of 4.0s to reach at least a 3.0, which means I have no chance for nothing =(

It's a violation of the TOS to crosspost the same thread in multiple forums. If you'd like to keep the one in non-trad I'll have the other closed. Please refrain from crossposting in the future. Thanks!

With regards to your post, you're likely to need an extended post-bacc to repair your GPA (minimum equivalent of 2 years full-time coursework chock full of upper level sci, maybe more). There are some options you can consider:

1)Take advantage of DO grade replacement by retaking classes.
2)After some GPA damage control, apply to an SMP
3)Kill the MCAT
4)Build stellar ECs

I'd never say that med school is beyond your reach. Getting a 3.97 is a significant accomplishment, but 40W's and a 2.6GPA is a very large hole to dig yourself out of. Keep chugging along. Get nothing but A's. It may take 3-5 years (or more) but if approached methodically it can done. But it ain't for the faint of heart.

1) I would suggest you try to only post things in one forum. A lot of mods don't like duplicate threads.

2) DO schools have a grade replacement so that could help your GPA if you retake courses you scored low in.

I am pretty much in the same boat as you, with the high credits but you have a way better gpa than I do. I do plan on taking classes I did poorly in, I am personally doing it in case I decide to go DO. That's really what you may have to ask yourself, if you want to go MD or DO. Hope that helps.

FWIW, I don't mind duplicate threads. 😛

However, like another said it may be of benefit to you take advantage of DO grade replacement.

I've got over 220 undergraduate hours myself so taking more classes to boost my UGPA isn't really a doable option. I'm banking on having a higher science GPA than cummulative GPA helping me. My graduating GPA in 2003 was 3.45ish, but I took some courses later which, through a variety of happenstance, caused that to drop some. Now, there's too much to change so the heck with it.

Good luck.
