I'm a med student in my 3rd week of studies. Everyone has been allocated times for a check of our immunisation status and other requirements. Although its not compulsory to get immunised against certain diseases i know that further down the track, not being immunised may prevent me from working in certain medical fields. I've tried researching on the internet and all but can't seem to find any information that will answer my question, so I've decided to turn to the brains here on this medical forum. Could someone please tell me what fields i would not be able to work in if i was not immunised against hepatitis, rubella and anyother immunisable diseases you can think of? Also mentioning why i would be disallowed entry into those fields would be of great help. Thanks in advance. ScrubMan.

Um, why do you want to avoid immunization? As a healthcare worker, you're at higher risk for these diseases. You have a much higher chance of getting one of these disease than you do of experiencing an adverse effect for the vaccination. Do you have a specific allergy or another reason not to be vaccinated?

Wow. Not very smart. Herd immunity only works when everyone else is immunized, which is not the case in America with all of the unregistered migrants crossing the borders everyday. If you live in a large city or work in an area that is exposed to the public you will really be putting yourself and family at risk.

I was under the impression that all healthcare workers in the US had to have current immunizations against Hepatitis B, and that everyone coming from overseas (obviously the OP) had to show that they had been immunized against measles, mumps, rubella, chicken pox, diptheria, and tetanus. Am I missing any?

So to the OP, that would mean you would be barred from entering any field of medicine in the US without current immunizations.

Again, someone please correct me if my impressions are wrong.... 🙂

EM is correct, HepB is mandatory and you have to show proof of MMR etc. if you come to the country and make up those shots if you haven't had them.
