Hello guys/gals,

I just found out that I need to have a physician LOR by February 2nd to complete my file at my school's health profession office. If I fail to secure the letter by the deadline, I won't qualify for a premed committee letter.

I live in Anaheim California, so I was wondering if any of you, sdn'ers, know any DO in the area. I am aware of the "DO finder" on the AOA website, but I wanted to know if someone could point out for me few shadow-friendly DO's.

If you aren't comfortable posting your response here, please PM me.

Thank you,

Thank you,

I can't give you a direct reference since I'm not from there... but if you just type "Osteopathic physicians in anaheim, california" or something like that... and spend 20 minutes calling around, leaving messages and your contact information... you'll be shadowing in no time.

Best of luck.

How should I ask? emails, mails, calling, or in person?

I tried to call one next to my residence and the rude nurse turned me down saying "we're not accepting shadowing request at this time". She didn't even verify with him.😡

Private Message me, I live in the Southern California area as well.

I emailed and called several different physicians before I was able to shadow. Expect several rejections before getting an offer. Basically, cast a wide net. I live in SoCal as well and it took about a week to find one. It's definitely doable within your deadline. GL.

With your deadline whether it is doable or not will depend on what type of doctor you shadow. When I shadowed in the OR I had to fill out loads of hospital paperwork and provide current immunization records and a TB test and all that took time. So I would focus on physicians in private practice to help speed the process. Also, you may want to try the iLearn Mentor progam online. I found a DO to shadow on there.

Call them and tell them your situation. I live in Canada and I directly called and the lady called me back the same day with a DO across the border willing to let me shadow.

It's a frustrating process indeed, but try not to be discouraged. As the others said, just try asking LOTS and someone will come through. I recommend, due to your time constraint calling, but I always think if possible, going in person is best. You get more results with most anything in life that way I think 🙂

And then, after you go through this process and see how painful and tortuous it can be, PAY IT FORWARD!!! I swear, I am going to let any pre-med shadow me once I am in the position to do so. I don't care how much extra work it is lol.

Good luck!

Too bad I can't wait 6 more years to apply (6 years assuming you do primary care). I will tell my son to shadow you though 😉.

Thank you all for help.

I completely agree, Grace. I absolutely LOVE teaching, so I sincerely hope that I get some eager student asking to shadow me.

I was fortunate enough to have a wonderful doctor who I shadowed... he shared an amazing passion for teaching. It's too bad that more doctors aren't like him!

OP, you're going to get rude nurses/secretaries when looking for a doctor to shadow. Just keep calling doctors and one of them will allow you to shadow! Stay persistent. 🙂

LECOM gives out free letters for anyone that applies to their school. Maybe you can ring them up with your problem and tell them you'll be applying to med school?

I don't think they "give" you a letter, but rather have one of their DO faculty interview you, and then they waive the DO Letter requirement from their own admissions process. I highly doubt they will give you a LOR that you can submit to other schools.

I have been wrong in the past though

I don't know if they give you a general one to use across all schools, but when I spoke to the LECOM rep, he told me one of their physicians literally writes you a letter and it is put in your file. No waivers.

I understand, but that still doesn't help the OP with his physician letter for his pre-med committee 😉

My suggestion is that he calls LECOM and tells them he will apply to their campus and that he needs a letter to get the committee letter. Maybe they will be willing to send the letter they'd give him to his school because he will apply. It's a long shot, but when desperation sneaks in, better do it.
