I may need to move for family reasons in several months! Is making a switch in IM to northern cali going to be an impossible task? I'm in a mid size program on the east coast and my husband is likely going to get a job in northern cali. If he takes it, then we will both have to move. I'm doing by R2 right now. Anyone know of any spots available in northern cali in IM for advanced positions? How should I proceed? I don't want to jinx it since he doesn't have the job for sure yet but he likely will and if he does, I will need to move on this. Anyway advice would be appreciated.

Call the programs you may be interested in directly and ask them if they may have any open PGY 3 spots available in July 2013. That is all you can do. If they say yes, then they will tell you how to proceed from there.

How common is this? I'm also assuming its totally unheard of to transfer in the middle of PGY2 year, correct?

Residency contracts are typically year to year from July 1 to June 30. Residencies expect you to uphold your contract. For you to leave mid year would disrupt their schedule and even the nicest PD's would not be too happy.

Why don't you just move at then end of the year? Or after finishing residency?

Is it awesome? No.
Is it practical (assuming you don't have kids)? Yes.

For all intents and purposes, you will not be able to switch mid-year, especially into a competitive area like NoCal. And if you leave your current PD holding the bag mid-year, you should expect a less than stellar (and by that I mean really, really bad) review and recommendation from him/her, which you'll need to score a new spot.

Finally, unlike ABFM, ABIM doesn't have a rule about finishing your last two years in the same program. BUT...if you were to successfully transfer at the end of your 2nd year, you should expect to have to repeat at least part of your 2nd year, if not all of it. No PD that you want to work for is going to let an unknown resident waltz into a new hospital/system and run the show on July 1. Every resident who has ever transferred into the program I graduated from (at least in the 7 years I've been paying attention) has had to re-do a minimum of 6 months of residency and most had to do an entire year...even the stellar ones.
