I'll be interviewing on 1/5 also. Does anyone know any details about URI's program? How do current students like the school, program, city, etc.?

I toured the facilities last year, my stepdad got me a meeting with Susan roush. She gave me a quick tour and the department was nice. They have a cadaver lab which is cool, and it's close to the beach. The classrooms looked a little on the small side, but that's expected with a small PT class. My brother goes to URI for undergrad and my sister did as well. They both loved the school and surrounding area. I grew up in RI so I went to visit friends a lot at URI. There's lots of fun things to do around Narragansett.

I personally like that their out state tuition is very affordable and after one year one can file for instate.
During my interview I will get a personal look of the facility and faculty and hopefully talk to the current students, so ill let you know!

I'll be interviewing there on 1/5 also, so I'll take a look at the school, city, and speak with current students while I'm there too. I was just wondering if anyone knew any info about the school so I can start to get a feel for it to tell if I like the school or not. But thanks though 🙂

I did my undergrad there and I can pretty much echo what was said above. I really liked the school and the area.
They also have TA positions available which cut your tuition in half if you participate in it.
Make sure you like the weather there though. Sometimes 2/3 of the year can be cold, and it takes a lot of snow for the school to actually cancel classes for the day.
Also, FYI, it's competitive. At least when I was there you basically needed a 3.6 to be taken seriously. .

My opinions on URI.....
Interview today went very well! We were told that they interview about 120 people out of 450 applicants. The professors seem super intelligent and in sync with the field. The facility is definitely state of the art. All the students that I met seemed very intelligent and happy with their decision in picking the school. The clinical director said that she is working on having paid third year affiliations (kind of like what MGH does with some slight differences) for the entering 2013 class. She said she was 75% sure this would be in effect by the time the 2013 class starts third year clinicals. Overall, I was very impressed with the program minus the location. While it is in a beautiful area, I come from a large city so I was a little uncomfortable with the small town feel of the campus.

My interview today went great! I enjoyed the staff and students. I was surprised by how small of a town Kingston is. There is nothing around! the area is beautiful though and I love this school. I think when it comes down to it my decision will be between University of Rhode Island and Shenandoah University. the next couple of weeks should be interesting as I start to hear back from schools!
I was really impressed with the program, facilities, and faculty. The students were welcoming also and all seemed happy with the school. I liked the small town and its close to the water. The only thing I'm worried about is tuition costs. A student said its very hard to obtain residency in RI because RI makes it hard to become a resident if you're there for only educational purposes. This is what the URI website says:
The Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education has set a high bar for changing from out-of-state to in-state residency for tuition purposes. To effect this change you must show clear and compelling evidence that you intend to have Rhode Island be your permanent place of residence following the completion of your studies. Such evidence may include one of the following:
1) Purchase of your primary home in Rhode Island before the first day of classes
for the term in which you seek re-classification as an in-state resident
student.
2) Marriage to a Rhode Island resident (your spouse must have been a legal
resident for at least one year prior to your marriage) before the first day of
classes for the term in which you seek re-classification as an in-state resident
student.
3) Starting a free-standing business in Rhode Island as an in-state resident
student. Ownership of an online or "virtual" business is not sufficient for
resident status.
So the total tuition costs come to >$158K for all 3 years as an out of state student. Too much 🙁

DPTHopeful where did you get that number from? I went on their website and CAPTEs website and it stated tuition and annual fees come up to a little over 26K. That makes it about 78K for the three years. Granted that is not including living expenses but I can't imagine they would be anywhere near 80k

I went on URI's website and found the tuition rates, then I calculated each semester for out of state tuition and added all the semesters together.

Can you break down that math? As an out of state student I'm calculating my tuition as 78K. The CAPTE website says the same thing http

The URI website is a little misleading with the graduate tuiition rate because it's only states for semesters with 9 -15 credits. Most semesters in the DPT cirriculum are 20 credits

I think I know what you did. I could be mistaking but I think you calculated thier annual tuition as their tuiition by semester. You doubled their 3 year tuition from 78K to almost 160K

Ohhh you're right. Sorry about that. Wow, that's what I get for doing it late when I'm tired. Thanks for correcting my mistake! 78K doesn't look so scary now.

My tops choices have changed as I've gone on more interviews. I'm now deciding between Temple, UMDNJ and MGH. My MGH interview isn't until February but I've heard a lot of great things about the program and hope I get offered a spot!
I got an acceptance call today! Very excited, but I hope I hear from more schools because URI isn't my top choice. I'm very excited though because I liked URI and might keep it as a fall back school.

I've been accepted to URI and was actually planning on attending but after crunching some numbers it seems unreasonably expensive for out of state students.....
The website says graduate students are charged $26,630 annually for tuition, health insurance, some fees, etc. However that's only for 9-15 credits....each fall and spring semester is 19-22 credits, which ends up being a maximum of 24 overload credits which cost an extra $1300 each. Plus an $1800 pt fee every semester, not sure if that includes summers.
So my breakdown goes like this....
Tuition fees etc
$26,630 x 3 = $79890
Overload credits
$1300 x 24 = $31200
PT fee
$1800 x 9 (if summers are included) = $16200
Grand total = $127,290.
This obviously doesn't include books, housing, and food to feed my face. Do these calculations seem right? I was under the impression that URI was more affordable.

I asked them about it and they said PT students do not pay the overload fee. They said that including all fees you have to pay that it comes out to $31,000 a year. Certainly not cheap but still a great deal cheaper than most of the other schools in the northeast.
