Hey!
so I am Hispanic and I will be applying in the next cycle and I was wondering if being an URM would have any effect in the admissions to dental schools? Does it really help? I know Meharry and Howard tend to accept URM students but do other schools prefer these type of students too? Also, if I graduated from HS in the US, do I have to take the TOEFL (English is not my first language)? Thanks guys! 🙂

Well...

Yes URM will greatly increase your chances. I don't want to say it will be a walk in the park, but....if you have a pulse and somewhat decent stats. Yeah.

No I don't think you will be required to take it, unless your not a citizen of the U.S.

I am not 100% certain on the TOEFL part, but from my experience with URM applicants you shouldn't have an issue.

If you attended a US university or college, I believe you do not need to take the TOEFL. Being that you are Hispanic, you are indeed considered as a URM. I believe only at Meharry and Howard will the URM status really benefit you. For other schools though, in all honesty being a URM will not earn you admission instantly. The applicant pool for dental schools becomes more and more diverse every year, with applicants being from all parts of the world and having different experiences, and dental school admissions are becoming more based on academics/involvement with the dental field rather than ethnicity/race.

Huh? That's crazy talk! Of course, it helps...a lot! There are schools out there especially the private ones that will give you scholarship money to attend. If you are a Hispanic URM, then avoid applying to schools that have a lot of Hispanics (all the Texas schools). I would apply to alll the Ivy League ones b/c they definitely want the diversity. I would avoid Meharry and Howard b/c they will be full up of URM's. Make sure you write on your essay that you will go back to your URM community and serve and not chase the money in an affluent neighborhood.

Thanks for your responses! 🙂

Well, I will still have to figure out which schools I am going to apply, I have a list but is not finished yet. It's funny what you say about me going back to my URM community and serve because the place I come from used to have or has one of the highest, if not the highest doctor-to-patient ratio in the world. Yet, it would be good to go back and help if they would allow me. 😀
