Sorry about yet another topic on diversity but... I just wanted advice on topics to speak about because I'm submitting my secondaries within a weeks time.

1. Im an avid cook and have catered weddings, team events, etc on top of being an athlete in undergrad. Its something that I love doing and I def want to share that with others ( briefly spoke about it in actives section)
2. Refugee status and transitioning to America. Years later( in high school to present) getting involved/volunteering wth organizations that got my parents their first jobs in the USA.

Which one would be better to talk about? @Goro @LizzyM @gyngyn ANYONE?!

EDIT: Personal anecdote, I wrote about growing up in a rural community in the Midwest as a URM. Talked about it extensively in multiple interviews, it intrigued many of my interviewers and they were always interested to hear more about it.

I vote #2. #1 is more of a hobby while #2 is more something you've experienced in your life and those experiences in of themselves, will bring diversity to a school you attend in a multitude of ways.

Very few medical students have had the experience of being refugees and even fewer have gone on to work with the refugee community. I think that is what you bring in terms of diversity to the student body.

okay great, thank you! I was thinking about speaking about how this led me to pursue health services and cardiometabolic health research. what do you think?

Not really seeing the connection there. The diversity thing is more to assemble a diverse student body so that as odd questions related to culture or patient care arise, someone might have the answer.
