I got a 26P (PS: 10, VR: 8, BS: 8) on the MCAT, I have a 3.9 GPA, participated in summer research programs at Harvard and Yale, conducted research during the school year and shadowed two doctors (so far, may do a third). I want to know as an URM what are my chances of getting in and should I retake in Aug. (I really don't want to).

Other URMs can post their stats here as well and maybe we can get advice from some who are where we want to be or know a little more.

Thanks.

I think the med school app is about the total package, and I think you are competitive to apply. Your GPA is strong. Even your MCAT is around the national average (maybe slightly above). If that's your first MCAT, maybe you should consider taking the August MCAT, and let adcoms know that you're taking it again.

As far as know what your chances are, why not call the schools you're interested in directly? Most schools have representatives from their respective office of minority affairs that will be more than willing to talk with you about your application. Establish a rapport with these people ASAP. That's all I have for now. Good luck!

Mexican American
28M (7 PS, 10VR, 11BS)
4.00 GPA

ECs
3 years HHMI funded research
Molecular Biology TA
Studied Humanities Abroad for a Semester
Volunteered at Hospital
Worked in Family Practice for 2 years

Should I apply to some top tier schools? The 7 in physics hurts me

I'm mexican American

MCAT: 10VR, 14PS, 13BS Q (37Q)
3.95 GPA for premed, I'm a post bac student.

I'm one of those hispanic Americans that looks white and doesn't speak much spanish so I put down that I'm white/caucasian on my application.

I'm Puerto Rican
MCAT: 12 V, 7PS, 10BS Q
3.17GPA
tons of ECs, leadership, & research

though I wish it was a 30 I'm still pleased enough w/ my mcat, I'm basically just working to have med schools look past my gpa. (I have a great upward trend...all As the past few semesters, and I haven't failed anything...just lots of B- which still puts you below 3.0)...so the gpa thing is worrisome, but I have faith that some (lower tier and maybe middle??) schools will look past it...I hope. =)

African American
ps 11 vr 11 bs 12
34M. I hate that I got an M, but I'm getting over it.

MD2BN10 you can apply and get in. i know a couple of people with stats similar to yours who got into a us med school. Definitely call the minority affairs office of all the schools you are interested in. They are there to assist you and will do everything in their power to help you in your journey. Good luck 🙂

Damn girl, you are smart, well should have known that, you are naija. congrats you are gonna get into Baylor, don't worry too much. In my case, i am a little concerned. 11 PS 11BS 7VR WR Q (29Q). This is literally the worst score i could have possibly gotten. I consistently averaged at 34 in the AAMC exams. This is so not like me, being African and all. Anyways, i hope my state schools look past that VR because I really do not plan on taking this **** again. I am just so dejected right now.

Afro Caribbean 3.71GPA. 2 yrs research @hopkins

9VS 9 PS and 10BS. O on writing sample. I'm a little bummed but everyone is excited for me in my camp. I'm applying anyway.

There is a book sold by aamc that ALL URM's should have..it is called "Minority Student Opportunities in US Schools" or something like that. It breaks it down per school how many minorities applied/how many were accepted/how many matriculated. It has all contact info for the minority head honcho also has GPA/MCAT..this is a MUST. Good luck all!

Thanks for this tip efex! 🙂 I have the MSAR, but from what you described this gives much more detailed information applicable to minorities.
