cGPA: 2.83 (1 semester on academic probation, 2 Ws, no Fs)
sGPA: 2.5 (no real trend, no Ds or Fs, mainly C- to B+)
Grad: Enrolled in post-bacc (will be retaking foundation sciences this summer plus advanced science courses following)--no post-bacc GPA yet
MCAT: Not taken yet (taking it this summer)
Paid clinical: ~2000 hours (medical scribe in emergency department, primary care, urology)
Volunteer clinical: ~100 hours acute rehab center for elders
Volunteer general: ~1000 hours various organizations, ~100 mentor for academically at-risk students of color for one summer, ~50 mentor for 2 freshmen students at college, will be starting at a resource center for HIV+ patients
Shadowing: None
Research: None
Leadership: College a cappella group events coordinator, college cultural student group board member, college hip hop dance student group board member, Welcome Week leader for incoming freshmen
Extracurriculars: university top choir, professional dancer for NBA team, competed at World of Dance Chicago

My biggest mistake was not taking college seriously because I was a naive freshmen and was not prepared for the college work load, which I felt kind of stuck with me throughout my undergrad. Also battled with family conflicts with me being gay. My grand mother died my junior year of college, which was one of the worst times of my college years to experience a death. After graduating and working for a couple years, I definitely feel I have matured a bit to re-attack the foundation courses to bring my science GPA up a bit. I am aware my GPA puts me at an astronomical deficit and is the main reason for my lack of confidence in pursuing med school. Also I do lack research experience, and will be working on that with clinic research experience. Is basic lab research important?

I am taking this process very slowly and remediating my GPA to be at an OK place. I will be considering DO schools to but I am hopeful that I will be able to get into MD school if I work hard in my post-bacc.

Any thoughts on how to improve my application?

I cannot recommend taking the MCAT until you are confident that any content deficits have been addressed.
Although you are not UiM, consideration for early economic hardships is given.
Right now your gpa is so low that a sustained period of academic excellence would be required to convince a committee of your readiness.

As of right now you're DOA for any med school. Do NOT take the MCAT unless you are 100% ready for it.

Now is not your time. Work and improve your app. You need to get 3.0+ at a bare minimum, and depending on your major/coursework, it may be time-intensive. That said, need to significantly enhance other areas of your app such as MCAT and ECs.

Best of luck to you.
