What is the definition of an underrepresented minority? Is it only ethnicity that is considered or is socioeconomic status a factor? Thanks!

only ethinicities that are underrepresented in medicine. for instance asian american would not be considered urm, but african american would. disadvantaged applies to low socioeconomic status.

Yup. You can check the disadvantaged box and write an essay explaining why you feel that you're disadvantaged.

I don't have the book with me right now, but I believe in Kaplan's admission guide book it had a section on it. I remember it saying you're not a URM just because of economic stance. Has more to do with documented ethinicity (like proving you're indian american) or obvious things, like ethicnicity you check onthe AMCA app...

I believe in the book it also said adcoms only consider you disadvantaged economically if it REALLY hurt you: aka lived in a car for 3 months because you were so poor type deal. Lizzie M is a great help on this type of stuff.

URM: Black, Hispanic, Native american

Is this on AMCAS? And I'm curious as to what exactly "disadvantaged" means...is it living out of a car for 3 months or something a little more relative? Thanks!

If you have to ask, then you probably weren't disadvantaged.

Native American, Black, or Hispanic. There is also the ORM as well.

Well....maybe I was and I'm trying to figure out what the AAMC considers disadvantaged. Obviously there are many levels and interpretations of the word. I feel like there were some hurdles growing up, etc...but I want to know what Adcoms feel like😀

Thank you LizzyM!

Frankly I'm a little offended that someone would assume that I couldn't be economically disadvantaged and go to Wellesley. But, a lot Wellesley students don't seem to get it either, so I'm not surprised.🙁

I never understood that line of thinking either. I went to an ivy, and people assume I must have $$. Schools like these have a WIDE socioeconomic distribution.

you should ask your question in the 'underrepresented in healthcare' forum. You would get 'nicer' responses :meanie:

I have a friend who is a white South African. Would she be considered an URM?

my academic advisor who also sits on an admissions committee said that Vietnamese are also URM. Anyone know if this is credible. I mean, this is from someone on an admissions committee but I haven't heard much about it from other schools.

I suppose that if a particular school wants to consider a specific ethnic group to be under-represented in medicine in that location (many Vietnamese and not enough Vietnamese physicians to serve them) then a school might make an effort to increase enrollment of qualified Vietnamese pre-meds.
