Hi,

Are Pakistanis considered over or under represented minorities? I know many people from the eastern subcontinent are in medical school and I have heard that can be a slight disadvantage...so my question was are Pakistanis lumped into that group? Curious...

Thanks

I don't see how Pakistanis would differ from Indians.. I see it as the same breed

My brother, if only our people could view each other as one breed then there would be no fighting...how I await that day...the same way I await Brooke Burke to come running back to me 🙂

give it a shot, doesn't hurt,

just say you identify yourself as pakistani/central asian, rather than asian indian. I think you have a legit point.

To my knowledge pakistanis (i am one) are not considered under-represented. if you are an immigrant, or had special circumstances like extreme poverty and whatnot, then i could see that being counted as disadvantaged. generally, though, pakistanis are very well represented in the medical field.

Thanks, I actually fit that last criteria of having been in special circumstances and being disadvantaged...having lived at poverty levels and finally coming out on top as an Engineer...but now I went back and want to apply. I was just looking at some common stats I found for minorities and med schools and they seperate Pakistanis and Indians so I wasn't sure about that.

I agree with this

You can PM me if you have questions about my school (OHSU) and also I applied to 20 or so schools a couple of years back and may have insight on those also in terms of stats and other stuff

Isn't it under-represented compared to the population??

In any case, it's not like you have a checkbox that says you're a URM. There's little point in arguing if you are or not. You only mark your race/ethnicity on AMCAS and that's it.

Definitely not URM..

if Asian Indians are not URMs, why would Pakistani's be?
I'm sure just like other Asians, Pakistani's perform well in general. URM in reality has to do more with actual performance rather than poverty (albeit there is some correlation between the two).

I am almost 100% certain that Pakistanis are viewed in the same way as Indians in the admission process, so that would be an over-represented minority.

I'm pretty sure AAMC defines URM as Black, Latino, or Native American. There is a full and more expansive definition somewhere on their website, but its pretty much those three races and any subsets of them.

Hasn't the fighting stopped? I'm pretty sure that both nations are not friends but not great enemies either like they used to be.

Pakistani = South Asian != Central Asian / Middle Eastern

well, if your a punjabi, then you're probably not URMed, and will be very similar to an Indian

but if your Peshtune or Brahui, your closer to central (Iranian, Afgan, etc) than Indian I think, and I don't know too many Afgan Doctors.

Pakistani is a combination of a number of notably different ethnicities, some south Asian, and some central Asian. As such a blanket statement doesn't work

a large blanket statement that none are URM would fit however (which happens to be the point of this thread)

Well I was thinking of trying that, all I would have to do is shave my head bald and I am gold as a mixed kid...but the problem with that is it would be sneaky...how would they know...I guess having a name like man doesn't help 🙁

Yeah, I get people talking to me in spanish all the time. And I don't speak a word of spanish lol.

I wasn't born in this country though and you probably have to list where you were born on amcas or something which would give it away.

Since we are on this topic, are Afghans considered URM?

I'm wondering just how touchy this subject is...especially because of current political and global issues as well as the obvious war(s).

I don't think Afghanis are considered URMs.

There is a list of all accepted URMs out there on AAMC's website.

Anyways, if you are an Afghani immigrant, I'm sure you have some interesting things to talk about that should help you in the application process anyways.

You think this would be a good personal statement for my struggle:
Now this is the story all about how
My life got flipped, turned upside down
And I'd like to take a minute just sit right there
I'll tell you how I became the prince of a country called America
In West Pakistan born and raised
On the playground where I spent most of my days
Chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool
And all shooting some cricket outside of the school
When a couple of guys said "we're up in no good"
Started making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
And said "you're moving with your aunt and uncle in America"

😛

One word: Kashmir

I don't like you, I'll f---ing bite you, can't stand nobody like you. You can't run, you can't hide, close your eyes, no surprise, come with me....

Lol, Puff Daddy is an idiot, but I like the guitar in Come with Me better than the original. 🙁 It is still Jimmy Page after all.
