Urology programin Stony Brook NY

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Stony Brook is a solid program in Long Island that is getting increased recognition nationally for its Urologic expertise (re: US News and World rankings). There is a great ratio of faculty to residents (1.5:1 probably...although that might change with the possibility of SB increasing their residents to 2 a year) and they are all VERY chill to work with. Not as much push to do research but a great clinical training experience. Good ancillary staff so most of the time after Uro1 year, you're in the OR and not covering floor patients or consults. Affiliated VA so you get good autonomous experience as well. Waltzer is one of the most down to earth chairs you will ever meet (and he's a chair, as in the Uro dept is separate from the Surgical dept). The area is suburban but with a bunch of other residents/nurses/other staff around, there's usually stuff to do and happy hours to go to if so desired. NYC is an hour drive (w/o traffic) so weekend excursions are possible. The call is currently (I think) evenly distributed, which means q4, no buddy call.

Basically the two biggest drawbacks (for me at least) were the location (I was looking for more urban) and the 6-year deal. Other than that, I think you get great training with a friendly staff. Just my two cents.
