US Doc practice medicine in HK/China

Does anybody know how difficult it is for a US doc to practice medicine in Hong Kong or China? How's the financial prospect?

Is the licensing exam unreasonably difficult to protect local doctors? The HK medical society does not state details about the exam.

Please advise!

I believe it might be more difficult if you want to specialize, since the medical system in HK relies heavily on GP and few specialists. While it might be easy for you to get a GP lisense, it might be realitively more difficult to become a specialist in HK. In fact, many GPs in HK go oversea for their additional trainings. For more information, you can contact Hong Kong College of _______ (surgeons, physicians, pathologists, ob......etc)

I know nothing about the actual exams........ just my 2 cents.

lets just say working in HK would take me a long long time to pay back my debt.

Yes,I agree what you've said.A native Chinese physician's monthly salary is not too much.But a qualified doctor from foriegn country,whatever he's major in,can achieve much money and fame.However,if you wanna get a license in China,and then you come back to your country,I don't believe it's a good idea,because license here is not admitted by most developed countries,unless your license is about traditional chinese medical.

I'm in China right now. I haven't read the average salary for a physician, but I know that migrant workers with no education earn about $150US/month in the cities, so I think a local doctor in the cities could earn more than $200/month (I'm guessing the $200/month may have been an estimate to the national rural pay of doctors...maybe the overall average, though, is about $400-$500/month).

A doctor here from overseas would do much better, though, especially in an area with its share of expats. There's an expat clinic here in Xiamen, China where the Philippino doctor charges $50US just for a short consultation. He seems pretty busy, so I'd say he makes a profit of at least a couple thousand USD per month on consultations alone.

I have family members in China medicine system, actually since 2000, you need topass their board exam in China to practise. It is not that difficult compared to USMLE. In top medical schools there, a bunch of Americans study medicine using English textbooks and at the same time, learning some basic English.
I heard there are a couple of American run clinics just for foreigner, but haven't visited.

But working exclusively for ex-patriates might be an option in the big cities?

Practice in China is chaotic to say the least. Yes, they are seeking OS physicians, but being credentialed requires a lot of paperwork etc.

Zhejiang University IS a very well-recognized school in China. However, many of my Chinese friends who have a medical degree in China are studying biostatistics or bioiniformatics in a PhD program with me, because they told me that even if they do well on USMLE they will have a very difficult time getting a residency in the United States (they are all Chinese citizens, by the way). So they have given up. And all of my friends are very smart and top students in China.

That being said, I am sure the training in China is very, very good. So you will learn what you need to learn and will be very prepared for any exam thrown at you.

I found it's difficult for foreigners to see the doctor in Shanghai, China, especially you cannot speak Chinese. My friend recommended me a good sevice hospital ----Gleneagles which is a famous organization in the world. So I recommend it to foreigners who need this infomation.
