Hello, I am about to enter my 3rd year of medical school starting my core clinicals at Kern Medical Center. I attained a 252 Step one score. What are my chances of matching into a decent radiology diagnostic program in california or other state. Thank you.

Tips for that baller step score?

Based on the NRMP report, every person with your step score matched. However, you will need to apply to as many programs as possible in your situation. People who rank around 10 places or more (I believe these are people who actually interviewed) all were able to match. So make sure your do your research on the programs that have taken US-IMGs in the past. This will help maximize your matching potential.

Do you have ties to California? If not, it's gonna be a rough time getting a spot there.

California is going to be tough even with 250s. This past year competitiveness went up for radiology and the trend will likely continue. I recommend applying broadly, especially to all the NE community programs.

I only had less than a month for dedicated study time for the step. Thank you all for your advice. How should I set up my electives to be like if I want a successful match? How important is research? I prefer a California match but wouldn't mind any other state.

California is competitive for anything. I'd work on just matching anywhere. With a 252, you have a decent shot it looks like at rads. Research wouldn't hurt, but doesn't look like it'll break you if you don't have it. Although, from my understanding, all of the radiology groups are trying to campaign to increase the competitiveness of applicants.

Good luck.

You earned a Step 1 Score of 252. Congrats! Per some SDN comments, you are yet another "loser, dumb, delusional Caribbean medical student" who utterly shamed more than 50% of USA LCME medical students on their Step 1. Way to go. LOL

The relationships you create/sustain during your rotations are crucial. This is particularly true for your career goal: Radiology. I have never visited Kern Medical Center, it appears to be a 252 bed hospital making it a small hospital. It appears UCLA also has an agreement with Kern for their being a clinical site for UCLA. Will Kern allow you to meet the type of physicians you need to pull for you? Might there be other clinical sites that AUC has in place to put you in contact with more physicians who can train you, mentor you, guide you and pull strings?

Step 1 Score is only part of the equation. Relationships are key. Maximize the options for your betterment. Your Step 1 Score helps AUC. How is AUC going to help you be a Radiologist? At a 252 Bed hospital? You'll have to do some research on this.

gopher it!

Hey I'm a US IMG went to AUC and got a 241 in step 1 wondering what are my chances matching a program in radiology and possible ESIR. thank you

IR might be difficult but who knows... I think DR is possible assuming you can replicate that score in step2 and you have no reds flags in your application...

The competitiveness of DR has probably increased again in last couple of years but someone in my class got plenty of invites with 220s in step1. Then again, I am at a low tier US MD.

IR will be tough due to competitiveness.

Solely based on your US IMG status and Step 1 score, you have a decent chance of matching somewhere, but I would recommend applying broadly and to several community radiology programs. Academic radiology programs are still competitive.

hey thanks CherryRedDracul. And i don't think i have any red flags other than being IMG on my application. And you are saying the academic programs are still very competitive. is there a possibility with my score to get into one you think?

Maybe. But you'd have to be a stellar applicant.

To put things into perspective, I'm a radiology resident at an academic institution in the NYC metro area. My program didn't interview any IMGs this year. The only academic programs I can think of which accepted IMGs are WUSTL-Mallinckrodt (but they take the most superstar applicants you can think of) and Rutgers-NJMS.

Also Emory. Emory’s notorious for that because they have way too many spots that need to be filled.

We are still training too many radiologists.

I’m a little baffled by everyone wanking off to a 252... you can easily find detailed and well written step 1 advice from people who scored in the 270s so why derail this thread
