Hi All,

I’ve been mentoring a few premeds recently, and it’s come to my attention that one of my pupils doesn’t have US citizenship. She’s not interested in DO because of the degree limitations outside the US...she wants to do international docs-without-borders type work as a side job.

She’s a rock star applicant otherwise, with extensive research, first author pubs, a 3.8 GPA, 95th percentile MCAT, tons of clinical experience, and some awesome leadership running refuge camps in Europe.

Is there a list somewhere of schools that take poeple who lack a green card or citizenship? I’ve searched around a bit but haven’t found anything recent or comprehensive on here or on the web. Maybe I’m looking in the wrong places, idk.

As always, thanks for the help.

PS happy new year 🙂

Edit: sorry for the ‘DO’ in the title - can’t seem to edit it

Did she complete undergrad at a US institution? She may have a clear path to US citizenships..otherwise, chances are slim.

She has two hurdles:

1) high competition with other int’ls who are seeking a small number of seats given to int’ls.

2) many med schools who will accept a few int’ls will demand that the student escrow the costs for 4 years up front. This is because fed/bank loans aren’t available to them, and no med school wants to seat an int’l who then has no funding for MS2 forward.

(I think this last requirement is reducing the number of int’ls applying)

I went to a highly ranked MD school and we had a couple of non citizens. I think a Korean, Chinese, and west African. So yeah, it is possible.

Possible? Yes. But,
1/ she needs to have taken the prerequisites in the US
2/look in MSAR for schools that accept internationals but double check on their websites as sometimes what they mean by internationals is Canadian but I think msar changed that now so idk. Just don’t trust msar 100% and double triple check before spending money on apps.
3/even if they accept internationals, make sure they accepted at least 3 last year cuz a lot of the time they interview but don’t accept anyone.

Just a clarification. If you are working with an organization like Doctors Without Borders you have full practice rights as a DO even in countries where DOs aren't allowed to practice. There are no limitations if you are with one of these organizations. DOs are also allowed to practice in more countries than you think.

Prereqs needs to be at US or Canadian univs. Check websites, some may even specify a minimum number of credits that must be at US/CA schools.

True. Several say that they accept int’ls but haven’t accepted any for awhile. Makes me think that any int’l that they’d really consider would have to have some strong hook.

I noticed that at least one med school used wording that suggested that int’ls are equally considered, which I don’t think is really true.

Very Possible, a lot of people told me it wasn't (**cough cough** PM advisor) but I'm sitting on 10+ interviews and already an MD admit. I understand their anxiety, it sucks, let them know it's doable, especially with those stats.
