Can anyone direct me to any sites that have information about the difficulties in a US trained cardiologist practicing in either Switzerland or Luxembourg? Or any personal experience with either of these two countries?

Thanks,

Generally in the EU, you'd be able to function as a physician, pending a review of your qualifications, and a possible clerkship. However, NO formal recognition is granted for specialist training outside the EU (same is true for European specialists coming to the EU). So it'll probably be difficult to get into specialist registers as a cardiologist, sadly.
Also note, that Switzerland has been notoriously protective about its medical profession. (i.e. REALLY difficult for non-swiss docs to get license). However, they now automatically recognize a general or specialist license from any EU country, even though you still have to make a formal application. So if you want to do Switzerland, it'll probably be easier to get a license in Lux. and use that to apply in Switzerland. (or perhaps even better: Go to the UK, which has the most experience certifying foreign doctors, and sit a specialist examination for a Royal Medical Society. However, I think that requires a formal UK based training program, but not sure. UK license also valid in rest of Europe and Switzerland, pending application to the national medical board).
Do note, however, that salaries esp. for specialists are generally lower in Europe, while taxes are higher. But on the flipside, working hours are generally much better. Hope this helps.
