I'm not sure exactly if Im posting this in the appropriate section, but this seems like a good place to throw these questions out there

Would someone interested in a "less" (using this descriptor based on what I have seen on these forums) competitive residency have a chance of getting into a US residency after Med school in Europe? I'm a current pre-med and have thought about doing med school in Italy, Ireland, or Poland (at English-taught med schools) and am very interested in psychiatry. also would include family medicine and neurology here. Would it be more feasible for someone with an interest in psychiatry to study medicine abroad and then do their residency in the US? Further, would it be difficult to get into a residency competitive within psychiatry? (columbia, cornell, etc)

thank you for your time.

Its more difficult to get a US residency in a competitive psych program coming from a med school outside the US. Its not impossible, especially with Sub-is in the US and strong research. But if your ultimate goal is to come to a competitive US psych program, its easier to do so from a US MD school. Are you American?

Yeah, I'm American. I'm pretty much aiming for American med schools; I just have been playing around with this idea a little. Also, I guess I don't fully know my end goal, but I suppose it would be awesome to end up at a residency with a decent emphasis on psychotherapy and psychodynamics, not necessarily the most competitive. But, since I'm still early on, I really haven't looked into residencies so I don't really know which are considered competitive. But it sounds like in order to make sure my options remain open, I should stay in the states.

Oldpsychdoc, yikes that sucks to hear but not surprising, I know the Caribbean graduates have a hard time. thanks for the info

how does an IMG compare to a DO in competition for a (MD) psych residency?

DO's are in a much stronger position.

If you are in the academic position that you feel you must make the choice between DO and IMG pathways, at least consider the possibility of ending up somewhere other than Cornell or Columbia. There are programs outside of NYC.

A horrific prospect to contemplate, I know.

It basically puts you on the same level as a graduate of a Caribbean medical school--which is not a great position to be in right now.

Can I ask why this is? If someone comes from a strong medical school in say England, France, Germany vs the Caribbean I would imagine the former are typically much stronger students? Is it because its simply too hard to know how good the schools are in every foreign country or something else I am missing?

No, you have it right. There are very good schools in India modeled after the UK system and there are very poor schools as well. I have no way to tell which is which.
