Hi everyone. I will be starting my MS1 year in a couple months. I will be commissioning for the Navy HPSP scholarship pretty soon and I am aware that I will become eligible for an USAA membership. I plan on looking into insuring my car and doing my banking with them. My question has to do with health insurance. My medical school does not offer a student insurance plan and I will need to find my own policy. Many students insure themselves using the policy SOMA offers. Details here: http://www.somainsurance.com/main.html

However, I noticed that USAA offers health insurance. I want to see if any of you have had any experience with this insurance. I am a healthy single guy with no history of any health problems. I am thinking about getting a health plan with high deductible and low monthly payments. I also thought it might be wise to get a Health Savings Account that I divert a little of my stipend each month. Obviously, I plan on comparing rates when I get my USAA membership but I just am trying to start budgeting my expenses for the year. Does this sound like a good plan? Any other advice?

USAA does not do health insurance. They will get you a quote from Assurance Health, but that is a separate company.

As for what to get, it doesn't really matter. They should reimburse whatever it's costing. I don't think they'll let you do an HSA, as uncle sam will be paying the bill. Just do the SOMA plan and let the Navy pay for it (or reimburse you). Easy peasy.

I had a fortis policy through USAA when I fell off of my parents insurance in med school. It wasn't required by my school, so HPSP wasn't paying. First year the premium was cheaper than my schools policy. After a year the premium tripled based on their pre existing clause. School policy was a better deal for my last year.
