i was waitlisted at sc last year and didn't get in -- but having gotten in this year i have some info that might help you guys out.

first off -- dr. quinn told me that they do not look at any materials sent after your application has been reviewed. the wait list is pretty much ranked and they just pull off the next person on the list when a spot opens up. this was pretty shocking to me since i sent in like a letter each week.

on the other hand, sc's list does move a lot more than at some other schools

i know how much it sucks to be in your shoes right now -- but on the bright side, i am completely glad that things worked out the way they did for me -- once u start med school you'll realize that a LOT of ppl take time off, reapply etc and i am yet to meet a single one who regrets that.
hopefully some of you have other acceptances, if not -- bottom line, if you want to be a doctor, you will be -- sometimes it just takes a little longer.

But geeeeeeeez 😱 , (Here come the rhetorical questions) Why tell us it is unranked when it is actually ranked and already set? If a school can't be honest with potential students what kind of message does that send? If USC accepts me can I just go back on my LOI cuz I wasn't genuine with my words?

I'm kinda bugged about sending all these LOIs and update letters and so on when in reality they have had absolutely no affect.

But I guess that is life and sometimes it doesn't make sense and can seem unfair. Oh well

Atleast I dont have to go through this whole kiss a**ing process again next year....

i feel the same exact way. i think im gonna just wait it out and see what happens now. i was thinking to write yet another letter, trying to "update" my life since about 3 weeks ago... which is kinda hard to do since nothing exciting has happened. i wish i could just update how much sleep i have lost over worrying about having to re-apply if i dont get into any of these schools i am waitlisted at. i would have a ton to say about how this process has been so frustrating. anyway, good luck to u and the others waiting also...

and supadupadoc, thanks so much for telling us that. i was actually questioning whether the list is actually "unranked". i thought it was kinda weird that most people i talked to that got off the waitlist at usc in the last couple years never actually wrote any letters, and still got in! on the contrary, a couple people that i asked that were on the hold list and wrote a bunch of letters never got in. so i guess it makes sense that we are just numbered, and they pick us off in order as more people drop. i hope those uc's start accepting the people that actually want to go there, so that those of us that really want to go to usc will have the chance!

Morning BUMP so maybe the waitlist gets 'bumped' and starts moving for us SDNers (although now we know its ranked) so well can all get in.

Let's hope for the domino effect. If other waitlists move, like the UCs, maybe Kecks will speed up too.

I wouldn't worry too much about whether or not the list is ranked or unranked. Personallly, I believe that sending LOI's and additional LOR's does make a difference (at least it did for me). I sent a email to Dr. Quinn shortly after I found out I was placed on the alternate list with questions about the alternate list and she promptly responded with "send me a letter to let me know you are intersterested and we will be in touch." I highly doubt that she would request a LOI if she was not going to look at it. Overall, I think you have been doing the right thing by updating the commitee. Let me know if you have any other questions.

i got off USC wait list last week (they gave me three hourse to decide!); I didn't write them any letter or e-mails so I don't know how much those help. I am still waiting to hear from Mt. Sinai -which is my #1 choice (I loved both schools but would like to stay in NY if possible). So if Mt. Sinai accepts me (which may very well be last minute) I will withdraw from USC and hopefully one of you will get my spot.

I also emailed Dr. Quinn after I recieved the waitlist letter. I sent it to admissions who told me they would pass it on to her. I never got a response so I assumed she didn't correspond with applicants, now I'm wondering if she even recieved the email.

Looking back, when I sent my letter of intent it went to admissions with Attn: Dr Quinn at the bottom. Is this what other people have done? I hope she recieved it or at least it made it into my file. Sorry I'm so paranoid.

why wont usc just make us happy? im going nuts. whats worse is i work at norris, and am on the keck campus each day. so i see my friends who are students there, and see the darn admissions office, and just wanna run in and tell them to call us already!! its soooo frustrating. just for your info though... i know they called people today, since my friend was in the office, and heard the secretary talking about them calling people to give spots today. so i'm sad, cuz i wasn't one of them! 🙁 dont know what else to do, besides pack up for hershey! rerock, im gonna pm u now!

Called SC....... class is full and they don't expect much more movement. Wouldn't tell me much more, not even how many are on the waitlist, just said 100 people (I thought that was how many people were initially placed so who knows...).

I just got my plane ticket out of LA today so I guess I'm moving on.....good luck to anyone still waiting

dont worry, u can still be accepted. although i too am totally frustrated and not expecting much from usc anymore, i just want to tell u that 1) i know people that were accepted off the waitlist in july last year, and one person 2 years ago that was accepted on the first day of class! and 2) the uc's, especially ucla, take their time accepting people, and in that case, there are probably usc people that are holding spots, but waiting to see if they get into a uc. its sad that usc isnt very informative (i dont even bother calling cuz i dont want to go insane... that would drive me nuts). i know way more than 25 people get off that list of a 100... 2 years ago 60% of the class was from the alternate list. i just think the movement this year has been slower than usual. at least thats what ive heard from people at usc that seem to know (people that i work with oncampus like professors at keck... not the actual admissions office which doesnt really say much of anything). i have already been planning to move too... got a place, and am happy to go to a school ide be happy to study. but it just makes me sad that communication isnt better at usc. i mean, it was supposed to be 100 people on the list back in may... but now there's still 100? i mean, if theyre gonna say something, it should at least make sense. alrighty, keep hope up... i will too. who knows i guess! take care 🙂

My first paragraph includes the words "excellent application", "very strong candidate", and also says that my interview went very well & resulted in "solid" recommendations.

hey no prob! to answer your question.... my wait list letter was the EXACT SAME!!!! even the order of the first paragraph, haha... it seems so personally directed, yet, u seemed to get the same exact one as me... very strong candidate, leadership skills i think (or maybe it was community service or something), great interviews with solid recommendations, ... blahh blahh. i totally got excited reading that, and thought it "meant something". how stupid of me, now that i see that it was the same exact thing u got too. i actually saw a friend of mine that is a second year at usc after i got that letter, and told him how nice it was, and this was his reaction: " yeah, i heard the rejection letters after the class is filled are really nice too". basically, i think the dean writes really nice flowery ones, the only problem is that it totally gave me high hopes for nothing! i was waitlisted at penn state, and got a hold letter saying something to the effect that they dont want me calling in, and they want to review the rest of the applicants before they review me again. really dry, and basic, so i had no hopes... but i got in! with usc, i totally thought that letter meant something, but nope. didnt get a call, at least not yet! i wish u the best of luck too, and to all the rest of u reading these posts. too bad our letters werent that individual 🙁

yup, movement has seemed slow. I've practically given up on SC.

I won't be reapplying, I don't think I could ever go through that experience again. But it does seem that reading past years' posts and also one current poster this year, reapplicants do have a chance at getting in SC the next year as long as you show interest. So good luck either this year or the next.

Hey Kickin, I would NEVER give up, although I have given up on SC. A part of me still wants to get in but reality has hit me. I've been accepted at Albany so I'm going there this fall and I am really looking forward to it, its just that staying in LA was my goal from the beginning.

By the way, I saw your story on another thread and your determination is pretty amazing and admirable, congratulations on your acceptance, you deserve it.
