USC Alternate List

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
ooh, good idea with the los feliz or silver lake. i have similar feelings about leaving san francisco and also have a boyfriend who very likely may be working in downtown l.a. how bad is the commute from those areas jalby? thanks.

i have a friend who went to usc med who lived in Loz Feliz - he swore that it took him 15 minutes tops in the morning - using surface streets.

Los Feliz is a really cool area...

On a side note, it seems like everyone has serious boyfs! 😉

My boyfriends sister used to live in Los Feliz and work downtown, and she said the commute was totally do-able. Plus, she said it is kind-of a good middle ground place between school & work areas. It does kind-of seem like everyone has serious bf's, but I guess you get to a point where your like...ok, WTF, why am I dating scum.

Anyhow, dosen't the job market suck. My BF has been applying for some time, and it is always the same story...we aren't hiring right now, but you are on a list to be hired. Of course he is trying to get a government legal job, so that REALLY sucks...What are the rest of your Sig. Others going to do for work in these deperate times?

my boyfriend is living in denial. he hates his job up here (in the financial industry) but dreads looking for a new job so he hasn't started looking yet. he is also just coming to terms with the fact that in los angeles he will have to own a car. i have no doubt the job search is going to be horrible for him though, so he might not move down right when i do.

Oh, just to clarify...I dont have a boyf, I'm still hangin with the scum! 🙂
I imagine it would be a pain to deal with job market etc, yuck.

Bounty...hey if things don't work out with the BF's job hunt, I may be back to the scum as well. Hopefully there are some hotties😎 around LA, god knows we've got to stay away from the medical students, way tooo stressed out! J/K:laugh:

Funny people. Nobody ends up staying together through medical school. I know of like 3 couples in our class out of maybe 12 who stayed together. One marriage was even broken up. I def wouldn't recommend living with a bf/gf when you get to school.

But on the brighter side, Los Feliz is a fine place to live. I don't think to many people from my class live there, but it is a little further (5 minutes) from downtown than Mont hillz is. And the job market isn't good at all. My ICM groupmember has a bf (one of 3 I can think of) who has been looking for a job here for a year non-stop (From Wash U in STL). Still looking.

thanks for the positive thoughts jalby. sheesh. i'm sure you are there to help pick up the pieces of these girls shattered lives after their breakups too. 🙂

Only the cute ones 😉.

It's actually prolly a selection bias on my part. I only remember the breakups, forget the stay togethers.

Some stats in my class: 88 males, 80 females. People who dated other students during the year. 3 couples. 2 current, one 6 months old, one three months old. One other one lasted from about Septembet to march.

One known hookup between two students. One other time of one student kissing another.

That is the total of all the intraclass dating.

Interclass dating: One one night stand with a 1st and 2nd, one couple from first and second.

4 second year guys who hit on EVERY SINGLE GIRL in my class. Needless to say, they ruined it for the rest of their class.

OK, in my MDL, which I know I can get stats for since I know everybody, here are the couple stats:

Single the entire time: 15 people
Came with sig other and broke up: 1
Came with sig other and still dating: 7
Didn't really speak all year: 2

Alright. I think my initial impression might have been a bit off. But I still think all the cute girls coming in should leave their boyfriends, regardless.

damn jalby.. you're hanging out everyone's dirty laundry..

it's amazing what people wanna hide.. but i guess it comes out sooner or later..

sigh.. no more medical students for me.. one was enough.. 😀

Wow, is that stat list on the web site jalby, or are you just that interested in everyone's dating life?

Well, since I am ugly (and fat, did I mention that I am really fat), I think I will go ahead and try to stay with the man. We have been living together for 3 years--I guess you get kind-of attached. By the way, not all single men are scum, just all the ones that I used to date.

Anyway, back to this waitlist. So, I get so confused by the admin office. Yesterday I called to see if an extra letter of recommendation had been recieved by their office. They told me immediatly that they were not taking any updates at this time. I replied that the previous week they had accepted and added an update letter from me, and that the letter of rec should have arrived the week prior. SO then she puts me on hold, and then another girl comes on the phone and says that the letter has been added to my file and then quickly gets me off the phone. It sounded kind-of fishy, like perhaps the letter hadn't been added and that they were just trying to get me off the phone... (the phone call had been the first time I had actually gotten through to the office after 3 days of calling and getting their machine). I guess it was fishy because they didn't even ask for who had sent the letter (which they had done the week before). But then on the other hand, mabey she just remember me from the week before, and knew that I was waiting for a letter to come in...who knows??

Anyone else try to send additional stuff in?

All right I called the admissions office (and they happened to be really pleasant), and they said that they have not pulled anyone off the waitlist yet because the class is still full. Meaning not many people are giving up their spot at USC, or USC gave out plenty of acceptances. So much for the May 15 effect. They also told me that there are about 100 people on the waitlist, and that any updates would be place in your file if you are on the waitlist. They also said there is no way to predict when they will start pulling people off the list, since it depends on the students holding multiple acceptances. I just wonder how many people that got into USC actually have multiple acceptances. I grew up fifteen minutes from USC and it would be a dream to go there for school. I don't care what anyone says I have been all over the country and there is no place like socal.

none should be holding multiple accepts now because "By May 15 of the year of matriculation, an applicant who has received offers of admission from more than one school should choose the one school that he or she prefers and withdraw from all other schools to which he or she has been accepted." (http://www.aamc.org/students/applying/policies/recommendations.htm)

Wow...I can't believe that their class is still full. My hopes of actually getting into medical school this year just dropped about 10 degrees🙁

They must has overbooked their class quite a bit. I know two people who just got off the UCLA waitlist who gave up spots a USC this week. So they must have given acceptances to more people than there were spots....I'm getting really worried now.:scared:

Ah well...today is a new day. I realized last night when I was inspired by a george michael song (yes...you read right:laugh:   ) that i am living in a very emotional state that I should not be so swayed by news about school...

Anyway, good thing is, now the "where have you given up acceptances" list has 9 spots for USC!! So, hopefully this number will just keep rising!

🙂

Oh my god, which george michael song? I recently heard "Father Figure" for the first time in ages and i was reminded of how much i love george!

Bounty...it was "Freedom" which mind you dosen't inspire most people, but every time I listen to it I get chills...no joke!

Freedom
I will not let you down
I will not give you up
Gotta have some faith in the sound
It's the one good thing that I've got

This is my theme song for getting in off my waitlists...except I substitute "sound" for "myself". Wow, I should just stop now while most people still consider me normal. Hell, I could be classmates with you---forget I said anything!😉

Hi CCHieb's, check your PM.

I think I was one of the first to get accepted off the waitlist. I believe the date was June 6th. a warm saturday afternoon. i was reading the preallo forum and on the studentdoctor irc chat..

papa smurf was one of the first to congragulate me..

good memories, i hope you and those of you on the waitlist will have a chance to share my experience.

best wishes!

hero...thats for the input. Empty out some of your PMs and I will respond!😀

A classic song! Love it! And I hope we ARE classmates because you love it too!😀

So another week of waiting, but at last june it here. I figure this is when the real WL movement begins.

Gogiants, I saw on another thread that you got off the UCSD waitlist...congrats! Guess you have some big decisions to make.

Good luck everyone....lets hope for some movement!

can someone please show this thread some love?
is usc full or what? has anyone heard of anyone getting in off the waitlist this last week? or are they playing some cruel game with us? i just want to know, so i can reapply now if i have to...this sucks. i'm seriously annoyed with this waiting thing....meow.

Hey Camstah, calm down you sound like you're going to have an ulcer or something. Anyways I am really pulling for USC as well, and I hope they have some room for us. From what I have heard (because I happen to be on plenty of waitlists) movement on all waitlists have been very slow this year. I also called a couple of weeks ago and as I posted earlier...their class was still full and they are waiting for people with multiple acceptances to make up their mind. In addition, there are people probably getting off a UC waitlist or other desirable school and that will most likely free up more spots. From what the receptionist told me, they usually take 20 people off the waitist. As for not having an acceptance, I can understand your frustration and if USC is your only hope I would recommend actually sending in the primary application again.

Hey camstah
Don't worry about freaking out...I know what you are goin' through. While I am on 2 WL's right now, I am v. stressed. It is good advise to calm yourself, though, because really, we have done everything that we can. USC will have some movement in June, but in all likelyhood, it will be limited. In terms of if you should send in another application, well...I can't say what you should do. For me, I have chosen not to. This is for many reasons. I figure that since I have been so buisy during this last year just applying, I have not done anything that would sig. add to my application. I did fine on my MCAT, so I don't really need to take that again, and i have been out of school for 2 years already, so it's not like i can re-take classes to bump the GPA (which isn't bad anyway). I have decided that I need to just take a year between applications for my own personal sanity. If I don't get in this cycle, I will apply for the 2005 entering class. If this is just too long for you to wait, then by all means send in your AMCAS...what's an extra few hundred $$ anyway?😉
I am just going to stick it out till the bitter end of august (or when classes start) and keep bugging the fu@k out of the admin office and the committee. I may even start sending pictures of my family...you know so we can get real close. As if they don't know more about my by now that my parents do..

Good luck, and lets keep out fingers crossed from UCS for us, UCLA for me, and for weirdo700's many WL's

thanks cchieb's....i feel better...i found out that a friend of mine who was also on the waitlist at usc got in two weeks ago....so yay for her...but that means they've been taking people off the waitlist....
i'll keep my fingers crossed for you 🙂

Camstah....
Did your friend say how s/he found out? phone call or letter?
I think that it is really weird how the admit office is so vague. I called yesterday, and asked if their WL had begun moving. Their answer was, "nothing has changed, and we will let you know if it does." So i said, "so no one has gotten in off the WL?" she said, "yes, nothing has changed"

WTF?? What does "nothing has changed" mean. I mean, I know I haven't gotten in yet, but I just want an honest answer as to if the list is moving....Was your friend actually WLed at the same time as us, of was she on some funky special list?

Let me know
CC

she was actually on the waitlist...got the letter like the rest of us, and then a few days after she sent it back she got a call from them......so i think they're just saying whatever will get you off the phone the quickest at the adm. office...if they say it is moving, then you'd ask how many people have gotten in, etc...if they say nothing has happened, you go, okay, bye...it's really annoying....they should just tell us the truth! sigh...anyway, i will continue to keep my fingers crossed for all of us....this process is frustrating....and i think it's mostly due to a lack of information....if we were all kept up to date on everything, i think it would be less stressful....

I completely agree...all I want is the truth, but they think i can' t handle te truth. Wow, over the last coulpe days i have been using far too many movie quotes to describe my life. I guess it is good to know that their class is not overbooked anymore.

Please oh please come through for us USC...

Camstah, did you decide to re-apply this year or wait?

i decided to wait actually...i figure i'll give it another month, maybe apply by the end of july, since that won't really make a big difference AMCAS-wise...hell, i always procrastinate on the secondaries anyway..but if i reapply, i promise myself i won't this time.....
you think it would help if we all went down to the admissions office and told them we wanted to go to USC so badly that we decided to start visiting them EVERYDAY? one person at a time? so, like, fifty of us will show up everyday, maybe that would get them moving a little faster with this whole process.....or maybe bring a fruitbasket or something....an apple for teacher...it worked in elementary school...😀

I think that is a good plan...if you don't mind me asking, how was the process for you this past year? For me it was v. confusing. I was most confused by which schools gave me a look, and which didn't. If you want you can PM me with your story, and I can do the same. Perhaps we can learn a bit from each other.

I would be more that happy to go down to LA and camp out in front of their office, but i do have that little job, responsability, boyfriend, bills thing going on. But if you make your way bring a laptop so you can keep me posted on any progress!😉

Perhaps I will just keep sending then annoying and sad letters like I have been?!? "oh admin committe...I am so desperate....please let me in..." and so on.😡

AH well...one more week of waiting **complete**

You know how they sent out a packet to everyone who is accepted this past week???? (See other USC thread) They sent out 171 packets total.

I called USC up recently and there has been no movement off the waitlist still. Disappointing news but hopefully it'll pick up soon.

USC took 2 people off the waitlist last week and there has only been 2 people taken off the list according to the secretary.

So....what the hell do you have to do to get off this waitlist?!? Are y'all writting letters like once a month, or more/less? I am on two WL, and neither are moving very well. Just my luck, eh?

Most of the movement last year already had occured by this time, so I guess it is a really slow year. I would recommend writing letters and sending any updates that you have. You also might want to ask if they think you should start reapplying, that way you might be able to get an answer. I'm pulling for you guys.

Cchieb, I've written one letter and sent in one recommendation in late June, and that was it. I plan on sending in another update this month and of course I will also let them know that the other schools that accepted me will begin soon. Good Luck.

Well...I finally saw my first SDNer get into USC off the WL! Congrats coldchillin'!

I got a little bummed yesterday...I called the Admissions office, just to make sure my file was in order, ect. I had an additional letter of rec sent in May from my VP, and he had gotten the info from fed-ex that they had recieved it on the 16th of that month, and I figured, "ok...they got it, I don't need to bug them by asking." But when I called yesterday, they said that they didn't have the letter in my file! I just keep thinking, well, perhaps it's on someones desk, and they HAVE read it, or mabey, I just lost an opportunity. I thought all along that had done eveything I could, letter of interest, extra LOR, ect, ect, ect and that gave me a little bit of peace...but now I find that the biggest supplement after I got WLed is missing in admissions land.
So sad, so sad.🙁 🙁

On a brighter note, I am very stoked for coldchillin', because i think that it was his first acceptance!

Oh my god.....I just got the call. I will be a trojan next year. Keep your hopes up everyone.

CONGRATS!! WEIRDO700:clap:

Glad to hear that the list is moving along, good luck at USC!!

PS: my letter of rec prob is over, it turns out the letter was sitting on Dr. quinn's desk, perhaps that is a good sign??

Thanks CChieb's I am still in total awe. Having your letter of rec in the hands of Dr. Quinn does sound like a very good sign.

Now comes the tough decision, since I loved USC and I know I'd highly prefer to be in state, but the extra $50k in tuition versus the school I'm currently holding a spot at is significant. Time for some serious thinking. Any current USC students have any thoughts? Please pm me if you have a moment. Thanks.

This is v. crazy, two in one day, and both SDNers

Well Congrats bcdnw!!

I would give advise, but it would be biased, seeing as I am still waiting to here😉

What is the other school in question? I am going to go ahead and add you guys to the WL movement thread....

woot! congrats you guys. i'll see you in a month!!!

Congrats both of you guys. Glad to see that there are people still getting off the waitlist. I wasn't sure what I thought of your chances right now.

As to Whether to pay and extra 50K and go to USC over Ohio state, that's a tought question. Wait, no it's not. Would you rather end up in sunny Southern California for the rest of your life or spend your winters in Ohio? And trust me, everybody who ends up at ohio state from california is working as hard as they can in order to try and get a residency in california. (wheras if you go to USC, if you are below average, you still get to end up in southern california for residency.)

Uhm...yeah. Picking up an additional $50k+ of medical school debt to avoid a couple months of bad weather each year might be a valid decision, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's not a tough question....

congrats!!!
See you soon!

It's not just a couple of months of bad weather. Fact is, one of california's biggest exports is medical students. I know at Ohio state, california makes up the second most # of students (I think it's like 60 people out of 200, but that was a while ago that I was at that interview). New York med, Columbia, SLU, and tons of other schools have californians as the first or second most number of students. And almost all of those students prolly want to end up back in california (every person I know who left) So those are all the people you would be competing against to get back to California for residency.

If it was only a couple of years, yeah, it would be a hard decision. I'm just saying that the 50K will gauruntee a California residency, whereas if the OP goes to OSU, he will have a very hard time to get back.

I don't believe that is true. Certainly a California medical school graduate has some measure of advantage getting a California residency position based on simple familiarity, but it's not prohibitive for folks from out-of-state to obtain a residency in California.

There were 24 open Dermatology residency positions in the state of California in the year 2002. 15 went to California medical schools, 9 went to non-California medical schools. Considering Stanford, UCSF, UCLA and UCSD are consistently considered among the top schools in the country, happen to be located in California, and primarily filled with California residents, that a significant percentage of those spots still went to a variety of students from schools all across the country should be telling enough that one is perfectly competitive for a California residency out-of-state. Another example, the 2003 UCD Anesthesiology residency program had nine openings - three of which went to California medical school graduates and six which did not.

If you're trying to suggest no one from Ohio State matches out of the midwest, you have to recall that 66% of the class are Ohio residents, and that the non-Californians are predominantly also from neighboring states - so it is increasingly likely that California is just too far away from friends and family for a huge percentage of those folks. But, hey, one of those aforementioned UCD Anesthesiology openings was filled by an OSU graduate....
