Just curious to know what people have heard about USC's program. I've heard it's not the greatest, but is that for people who intend to do fellowships? If you want to remain in Southern California and just want to go to private practice, then I'm assuming it's not that bad of a program. Any thoughts?

Talked to residents who interviewed there last year. They are still saying stay away from that program if you can. Not only because of the financial and accrediaiton issues they had but they said that the residents are not treated well, no teaching and low board pass rates and that dark cloud of a reputation.

Thanks doc_strange. With that being said, if an applicant wants to eventually end up practicing in Southern California, would they be better off going to "better" residency programs on the East Coast and come back instead of staying for a program like USC?

Well i live in socal and want to live and practice here so i know what you are going through. From what ive learned from talking to others is if you want to practice here it does help to do residency here but a good respected residency is more important i.e dont go to Drew over Columbia just to stay in cali. Most programs have connections nationwide (or so they claim). Im not exactly clear on where USC stands in terms of connections but they have some respect issues. I would talk to the senior residents on your interview day and see what kinds of jobs or fellowships they have lined up and see if they had any problems getting positions after residency. I think if youve got more prestigous programs lined up on the east coast it may not be a bad idea to go there (its just 3 years) and then come back.

Don't they say you should do your residency where you want to practice? Would they favor a job applicant who did training at a program like Columbia over an applicant who trained locally at a program like USC? I know it's a delimma, but I was just wondering what people thought.
