Hi,
Wanted to start a thread for SDN'ers joining USC's class of 2007.Please feel free to include any matter regarding the school or the program or anything else that we can discuss.

Hi Carabelli,
Wanted to know if you have already selected any apartment around USC. I live in bay area and am very confused about selecting an apartment. It would be great if anybody has any information regarding housing at USC.

Thanks.

Hi Ram,
You know i'm chalking out the right area to move too at the present moment. I live in Ojai, california which about an hour and 45 minutes of a drive north of L.A. and am planning to move closer somewhere between Ojai(Ventura County) and L.A. as my wife works in Ojai. Unless you want to move into university housing the area around the campus did not look too promising. West L.A. around newbury park, agoura hills, thousand oaks, seems to be a great place to live and is about a 30-35 minute drive to USC. Also i found out that MTA has bus services from these areas to the USC dental school too(crossing of Jefferson and McClintock...) do a search on bus routes from these areas on the MTA or Ladoot website..i'm sure you'll come up with something. Also i'm sure taking the bus would be far more relaxing than driving through that crazy LA traffic.
Have you called the University housing people to find out what they offer?
Keep posting..and all the best!! 👍

I am a foreign trained dentist from India and I want to apply for
the Advanced Program for International Dentists that is offered by
California Dental Schools. I would like to apply for the DUGGANS Gateway program to train for the practical test administered by various CA Dental Schools. I would like to know if any one enrolled in the DUGGANS program to prepare for the practical tests administered by USC, UCLA, UCSF, UOP and LLU. Please let me know if anyone found this program useful. The fee is around 8000USD for the Gateway program and I dont mind spending it if it helps in the practical test but I dont want to waste the money if the program is of no use, the DUGGAN website mentions that the Gateway program is useful for students trying to do well in the practical test administered by CA dental schools,
Thank You,

Oh yeah and you could also e-mail john as he has compliled a list of people interested in sharing apartments before school starts. Ask him to include you in the mailing list too so that he could send you that attachment...

Hi denzel,
This thread was started by me specifically for folks in the upcoming class of 2007 at USC so that we could discuss issues regarding the school etc etc in particular. So please try and refrain from including questions other than that so that we can be focussed here.
But just to answer your question i would still like to briefly include that it is not required to do any such cource if you are confident of your skills. All you need to do is get a decent score on the boards, practice your clinical skills anywhere..you can, be it someone's clinic, back in your country...., be presentable and proper, honest about why you want the practice here and why you like the profession.... there is nothing more than that, that you can do apart from all this to be selected..so keep the faith and confidence and take one step at a time slowly and steadily.
Very important tip --- "observing at a dental practice under a good dentist who is willing to guide you and tell you how to prep etc is far more valuable than doing any cource like that!!"
Again this is all my opinion..so take it at face value only and make your own decisions!!All the best!

carabelli,

Thanks a lot for the information. Currently I am living in Bay Area and we (myself & my husband) will be moving to LA. So I want to stay close to the school. I heard that even if you have a car, its very difficult to get parking in USC, so only public transportation would be better. The apartments around USC are very bad (not the school provided housing). They are very expensive too. I heard the area is not that safe either after 7 pm.

I need to see if public transportation is available after 7pm (if we are working late on some days).

Did you guys get info from USC about the fee and how much its going to cost (2005-2007). The data I have is from previous years.

This is what the financial aid office sent me!Speak to audley marzo if you have any specific questions. He is very helpful and will take time to answer any questions you may have.
About you guys moving to LA, university housing for married couples would be a good idea and its best to make that call to the university housing dept. to weigh out that option...the number is on the second page of the acceptance letter.Do let me know what they say too!

Living Arrangements
Expense Items With Parents /University Housing /Off-Campus Housing

Tuition $ 50,987 $ 50,987 $ 50,987

I believe the first 6 months are when we would have to stay in the labs for those crazy hours and get used to the system and yes it is best to stay as close to school as possible during that time if possible.
Also you're right, parking is an issue too thats why i'm planning to commute by the MTA service to school from Newbury park or Thousand oaks. I mean parking is available and evertthing but would be an added expense thats all.

hi there ,

You're badly misinformed. Agoura Hills, Thousand Oaks, Newberry Park area (which is nowhere near west LA) is NOT 35 minutes to USC. Its more like 1 hour 20-30 minutes. Dont forget about city traffic!! I currently drive from the SF Valley and it takes me about 1 hour.

To be within 30 minutes, try looking in West LA, Culver City, Pasadena, or better yet, around the Staples Center area.

oh, and MTA sucks!

Hi,
Best to mail John about this. When i asked him he said that they didn't have a booklist as we won't be having lectures... :scared: ??? Best to mail him and then definitely post what he says....ask about instruments too actually!!

Hi Shawn,
Thanks for the suggestions ..!! Thousand oaks and agoura hills agreed is not 35 minutes from USC but it definitely is not an hour and a half. Have done the drive enough number of times to know that!! The total distance from USC acc. to mapquest is 45-55 miles and unless of cource one gets stuck in peak city traffic, it is doable in about 40-45 minutes...but yeah culver city may be an option.
Do you know if the topanga canyon area would have back roads to escape the traffic on 101 and 405..?? Why do you say MTA is crappy..is it the service?
Also, are you already in the ASPID program at USC?

No, I'm actually a first year student.

I live in Woodland Hills and it took me 1 hour 40 minutes to get home today in heavy traffic. No kidding. Again, it usually takes about an hour with average traffic. Woodland Hills is closer than the areas you mentioned.

I guess you could take the 10 to santa monica and then travel through malibu and take topanga canyon. The drive is much nicer, but that would only take longer, i've tried it in the past.

About the MTA, I guess it doesnt suck. Just not my thing.

Dear friends,
I am from the east coast and am presently not in the States. I havn't yet planned anything.
I really appreciate the fact that Carabelli has started this thread so we all can get to know each other and also discuss our concerns.
We can all keep adding what we know to this thread. For the time being I received this mail from John. It's about the transportation services available around USC.
http://transnet.usc.edu/

I'll try and keep adding info.
till next time..regards n best wishes.

Wow ..now considering you stay around woodland hills and its still takes you over and hour does say a lot ...!!Now i'm wondering if i should just maybe crash with someone for the week around campus and maybe drive over the weekends!!
Do you know what kind of class schudules/Clinic timings the Aspid class go through??
By the way thanks for your suggestions...this is extremely helpful!!

Hi Elementz,
Are you planning to buy books and equipment from your home country when you come back?? If so do you have a list or something..??Also what kind of exams will we have while we're in school..i mean with no lectures and stuff..how will they test us...??

Hi Carabelli,
I don't have any list of books/instruments that we may need. However, I think it wood be good to bring along the text books that we already have.
I am not sure how they are going to assess/ test us as there are no lectures but my guess would be that they have some sort of MCQ questionnaires or something on those lines.
does anyone have a clue as to the books we may need?

I have a question about the transcripts. They have asked us to submit our original transcript when we join. I don't have a cumulative transcript from my university (though I have original mark lists for every year) and don't know how long it would take before my Uni issues one to me. Also me and my family do not live in India so that anyone could go find out personally. What do I do? please suggest.

any muslim girls in this batch of USC?????

I apologise for the late reply as i am in India and just didnt get the time...
I am facing the same problem. I was thinking maybe we could submit our copy when they ask for it and then get another one later from our University here.
Do you know if they need a consolidated mark sheet ...?? Or is it individual mark sheets of each year required??

Hi,

I would recommend to move closer than Thousand Oaks .Santa Monica, Venice, West La , Culver City are nice places and also on the route of the MTA / Culver City bus line even Blue Bus of Santa Monica .

You can check out craigslist for apartments in those areas and findd something safe and nice. And , I agree that it is not safe to live around USC.

For those who wunder : I am not in the batch of USC 2007 . YET . 🙂 Hope to be soon..... 🙂

Best wishes for all.

Hi all,
I'm presently on a H-4 dependent visa and have a co-signer in order to apply for a loan. I've been having some trouble with the loan procedure.
When I'd called up Salliemae they asked me for an SSN number n when I told them I didn't have any they said that I need to fill an application form for financial aid available at USC school of dentistry...
I've been calling USC for the past 2-3 days and they've said there is no such form....when I called Sallie mae again...they said the school has this application.....looks like I'm running around like a ping-pong ball in b/w the two.....n no progress with my loan!!! 🙁 .
Anyone with a H-4 visa in the same boat?????
How did u guys apply for a loan.........please help!!!!
Thanks in advance.
best wishes,
E

Hello shaya,
I am a muslim girl. Just wondering if I met you at the book store at USC during the exam?

Besides that, I am still trying to look for a place to stay near USC. I have some friends already there who live around the school's 'not so safe area'. They assure me that it's totally safe, nothing to worry about, and just to 'keep my eyes open'🙂

Another thing thats very useful is to try and get the handpieces for school from another country where it's relatively cheaper. I an off to India tomorrow and though I'll get them before school starts.

For those of you who are intrested here are the names of the handpieces we need(would suggest you guys confirm this info from school before you buy it)

Mid west traditional 5 hole handpiece(Fiber optic)
Mid west shorty slow speed handpiece.

Got this info from a friend at school.

Hope to see you guys soon at school.

Best,
Safa.

whats up?so reaching to india very soon.or i think u would reached before u read this mail.have fun.take care.call me once u r here.bye.bon voyage.

Hi Safa,
Instruments here in delhi would defintiely be cheaper ..but i hope its not compulsory to buy from the USC bookstore...coz there is a $5000 dental issue charge which is for instruments..right?? I mean would we still be charged that even if we have all the instruments required??

Hi all,
Looks like we need to post more often... 😀 ....It took me a while searching for this thread 😀 .
Anyways, Just a reminder....March 1st is the deadline for the medical reports and immunization status reports to be forwarded to the school.

... one more thing....I received a package from the school (university actually not the dental school in specific) yesterday about mailing/faxing a letter "intent to enroll in graduate studies"......wasn't sending a letter along with the deposit of $1000 supposed to be the same.

Thats for now....please keep the info coming...
cheers 🙂

Did any of you guys fill out the insurance waiver form? I already have health insurance and so I don't want to take the insurance provided by the school. And it says in one of the forms to fill out the insurance waiver form if we already have any other acceptable health insurance. I tried to go to their web site, but could not open the form. If anybody has already done that , please let me know the web aaddress.

Thanks a lot.

Hi Swati,
Just got back after holidaying at home and called Sallie mae. They did ask for a SSN number from me too but then after i explained everything they specified that we don't need to worry..!! Once you send in your application with the co-signers info they will get in touch with the school and work that problem out. All you need to do is send them the application with a copy of your visa and a photograph.
It wil take 72 hrs for them to process teh application once they recieve it.
Hope this helps...all the best.

Hi,
Did'nt you need to wait for the loan to get processed to show funding for the i-20..how did you fill the letter of confidentiality? Also how much time will the i-20 take?
I went and got myself registered and got my h-4 visa and passport verified at the Office of Student services. Am now waiting to hear from sallie mae.
take care

Does anyone know what would be an economical accomodation ..on campus!!
I need a reasonable, quiet place to crash during the week ... plan to go back home for the weekends. i did find something on the housing site for $400/person..for a one bedroom...but am not sure if its close to the dental school!!

About loans for people on h-4's...a follow up..
I called sallie mae and they checked my info and gave me a a SSN number after a preapproval. Also now they will contact USC and get it approved from them which may take from 24 hrs to 30 days.
The actual SSN number from CIS will be required for my second application next year for which i would need to apply for SSNumber and this number assigned to me will not work next time. They have a site called manage your loans.com which is quite nice and makes the system quite transparent and we can check the status....with disbursement dates etc etc..
Hope this info is useful to u guys...all the best!!

hi there everyone,
hav u all started collecting extracted teeth yet and if so how r u storing them. how can we carry em to LA without fearing a leak into our suitcases!!!

Have you all applied for private loans? If yes which one did you apply and why did you choose that bank over others. I am really confused about which one to choose. It would be great if anyone could share the info with me.

Thanks a lot.

Hi Shaya,

Even I am having the same doubt. And one more doubt is will the security at airport allow us to take those extracted teeth in the flight?
I was wondering if we can remove the teeth from the solution and put them in a sterilization bag and sterilize them in the autoclave and then take them with us. Atleast then we don't have to worry about the leakage. I am not sure if we can do this , but I'll confirm it with some of the doctors and will let you know.

You might dehydrate the tooth in the process though...i didnt get the time to do this when i was home..and am now wondering how to go about getting them!!
About the loans... speak to Audley Marzo at the fin aid office..he will send you a sheet comparing various loans and their benefits and disadvantages.
