Can anyone comment on their experience at the Essentials of Emergency Medicine course USC puts on each year in Vegas? I'm trying to decide whether it's worth going since I'll be partially funded, but will still have to make a significant outlay of cash to go. The bonus is, I would get the time off an off-service rotation. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Hands down the best conference you can attend in my opinion. The USC crew is funny, at the cutting edge of EM, and highly entertaining. You will learn a whole lot in a short amount of time. I am planning to go in November as it is a blast. Mel Herbert MD, Stuart Swadron, Billy Mallon, and the rest of those guys put on the best "short lectures...but highly informative" around. Go for sure!

Last year, I purchased access to the course videos online at http://www.uscessentials.com/. As a resident, I was able to get it cheap. I may do the same thing this year, if it's available. It's an excellent course, but I'm not sure if there's much advantage to attending in person.

Is it really different from EMRAP?

I have never been to the Vegas conference but I can vouch that the EM attendings at USC are super strong. I have learned so much from Mailhot rotating in the ED and I'm not even an EM resident! If you meet him ask him to show you a few tricks with bedside ultrasound.

I've also attended the course for the last several years, and always come away learning plenty of new things. They have excellent speakers who are always entertaining and have the best and most current information.

If all you want are the lectures, you can probably do fine by getting the online version. The course has become my excuse to go back to Vegas every fall, although there are rumblings that Mel may be moving it elsewhere soon.
