So I had my USC interview yesterday and I have got to say that I was pretty impressed on how much they changed my mind about PBL. The PBL discussion session felt like something out of House, where we diagnose symptoms, come up with ideas, and learning needs. I thought it was pretty awesome and good grades are supposedly easy to get because they usually give out A's and B's. The facilities weren't that bad either. If you have an upcoming interview with them, be open-minded about it.

But watch out for that tuition. Sheesh. :scared:

Funny you mention House. I've been telling my parents about what I do in case during the weeks and how we work out the problems the way we do. My mom said I needed to watch House cause I was describing the exact process she saw in that show. I watched it for the first time earlier this week, and in that first 5 min scene I was like :wow: (wow) because it was pretty similar.

I was very impressed with the PBL when I interviewed at USC. I still remember every detail of te problem we had were I don't remember a thing about the microbiology class I was taking at the same time. USC has moved to the top of my list since, it didn't think much of the program before my interview.

I like the sound of this cirriculum. Ahh, I have been on review for a while now. Does being from upstate NY hurt my chances for them to seriously consider me?

Sorry...I never heard this but what does PBL stand for???

We were also told during interview that USC has changed its PBL to hybrid PBL which is the combination of group learning on each case and the lectures to summarize each case! So it is not 100% PBL anymore, and they have added lectures to improve the quality of their PBL curriculum.

i got an interview invite there last night and it really made my day! cant wait. i am going to try and coordinate it with a weekend that usc football is home so that i can check out a came at the coliseum.

PBL = http://www.usc.edu/hsc/dental/ccmb/usc-csp/Quikfacts.htm

hoss19, This is the page that you need to study before interview:

http://www.usc.edu/hsc/dental/students/PBL2/

They send you a packet and it includes a pink sheet that ask you to study this page and then sign it. On the day of interview, they devide you into small groups to mock the PBL and learn how to work with PBL system. It was a simple case, and it was fun to do!

Good luck on your interveiw!

good luck getting tickets man....you will have to prob pay a lot for em🙁

That's why its great to be a student. Nothing like cheap season tickets. The Ohio state game was awesome!!!

Watching that OSU game on tv... not so much 🙁

so am i to assume you made it to the game? do dstudents have time for these kinds of things?

i guess you could essentially work on your PBL cases in the parking lot while working on your cases of PBR;]

hey everyone,

I am going to have a USC interview this upcoming week and I was wondering what was the topic for the PBL interview? Was it hard? and also what is the 15 min writing session, do you have to write an essay? Also on your supplement information that you have to turn in, do you hand write it?

sorry for asking so much, its my first post

thanks for the answers ahead of time

The PBL interview session comprised of ten prospective students with 3 facilitators (adcoms ppl). We basically had to list the facts, ideas, and learning needs of each part of the case. My group was able to determine what the cause of the problem was through our deductions. You don't need to know a lot of bio info necessarily, just need to participate and contribute to the discussion. I had a case about a person who eats raw oysters, drinks a lot of alcohol and goes on a flight. We ended up figuring out that she was pregnant. The answer isn't the most important part, but more of the thought process and how it leads up to the answer through group work, cooperation, and ideas about what could have happened.

FYI... If this is indeed the case any of you future interviewees come across, I wouldn't suggest blurting out that you think she's pregnant in the first few minutes. You might make the wrong kind of impression

And as mentioned earlier, the cases are not hard, nor are the writing prompts. It's a fairly low stress process, and they will let you know that up front. (This unlike another interview I was at where some students were really freaking.)

The weekend affords us an extra day to work on our "learning needs" for case. What better than to waste that precious time than at a football game. 😀

nice! sorry about oregon-state...but it looks like a ton of schools went down this weekend

how the heck did u figure that out?

Don't worry, it was a step by step process! I remember there were like 4 parts and every part gave us the new set of information. Therefore, at each step we could eliminate some of the possibilities! It is fun, and you just need to be involved in discussion!

hey all,

i had the same question about the supplemental app. as rok917: do we need to write the answers on the green page itself?

Thanks!

I recently interviewed at USC. I enjoyed the PBL session that I participated in.
