Yeah it messes with my class schedule quite a bit too, I'm not complaining though interviews are more important.

yeah i have heard nothing but rumors about usc, knowing a couple of ppl that go there myself... none of which are good. whatever, its still usc and an hour from where i live so still one of my top choices 😀

I know Harvard, USC, and Indiana uses PBL, does anyone know any other schools that uses that method of learning?

Welcome to the never ending stream of USC rumors. I see you are new to SDN so be ready for more.

Is it just USC with the rumours? and in your opinion is it still worth going to the interview?
the school used to have a good reputation!

That totally depends on you. Most applicants don't have the luxury of turning down interviews and need to attend all of them in order to up their chances.

So is it worth going? If you are considering skipping it solely because of the rumors you've heard, then I would say skipping it would be a mistake. If you any curiosity about PBL, the school, and surrounding area, then I say go.

All of us first years are hearing rumblings from the upperclassmen. I have even personally talked to some of the people that have posted negative things here on SDN in the past (one of them I just met hours ago). The general consensus from all of them is that some major changes have recently been made, and just about all for the better. More resource sessions (lectures) have been added to aid in the funny PBL curriculum, and a major overhaul of the clinical structure has taken place to get rid of the major bottle neck for those who couldn't graduate on time.

I will admit that a lot of the first years are in the midst of adapting to PBL. We have grown very comfortable in lectures during undergrad and are current going through some growing pains to get efficient at this new process. What we already appreciate however are the few afternoons and all day Thursday off that this curriculum affords us. And with the plethora of clubs and outreach opportunities, there is a lot to do and get involved with allowing us to learn more in the avenues we choose. (The scheduled free time does diminish after the first year.)

I got invited to interview at USC on Feb 19. Seeing how this is one of the last wave of interview sessions and there has already been 12 in the Fall, I pretty much got a snowball's chance in hell, eh?

If they're still interviewing, they're interviewing for a reason. USC is notorious for filling their class late in the application cycle. They even state it on their website.

How formal should I dress up for the interview? Full-on suit or would shirt, tie, and slacks be sufficient?

I'd say 99.99% of the applicants wear full-on suits. There was only one guy I've seen without, but he was sporting a shirt/tie combo in our school colors. 👍

Thanks a bunch!

On the green applicant profile, Question #8 "Describe any special interests"

seeing how question 5 and 6 seem to cover hobbies and special talents/skills, what is question 8 asking exactly? Special interest in the political sense (ie PETA, greenpeace, NRA, ACLU, etc)?

Haha... this sounds all too familiar as I was thinking the exact same thing when I was trying to fill it out.

I didn't go the political route, but in a way, described some other things in life I was passionate about and how they would relate to a career in dentistry.

I remember I was asking my friends what I should put on there too 😀

So you put stuff that wasn't mentioned in the hobbies and special talents/skills section? I sort of threw out all I could in those previous questions and can't come up with different interests that I haven't already used lol

Is there a chance for acceptances for those who interview as pre-dec?

Hey guys, I got an interview invite as well. My problem is I live in Canada and I don't really have the money to go all the way to LA for an interview this late in the game. What do you guys think? I'm thinking of calling and asking if they have some policy regarding interviewing international applicants. Feeling really bummed right now 🙁

Who said it's late in the game, some people have no interviews

I just think that 1) b/c I'm being super negative and 2) so many people have already been accepted

Would you happen to know some specific numbers? number of people accepted? % of class full? total # of interviewees? Thanks.

It is never too late. Long story short I got in to Tufts on Dec 1st, moved to UNLV because it was closer to CA, then moved back to LA because I got in to USC a week before school started. 3 years in the Navy, now off to Ortho!

Forgot to mention I was in the first interview group at USC. My friends in my class that interviewed around this time fond out weeks after their interview.

Like I said, it's never too late.

Good Luck.

Wow, a week before eh, and how do you like USC?

Guys, do you know if during the day there is time for a one-on-one interview with the faculty? Or is it just the group interview?

Thanks

There will be no one to one interview. only group discussion (PBL) and 2 staffs will sit inside. Good luck on ur interview!!! Did you receive a call from them or e-mail?

E-mail, but I really don't know what this PBL thing is :S and how do you make yourself stand out with 30 people?

I graduated in 2006 and USC was great even with PBL. Every school is what you make of it. People complain about USC and PBL, but having gone through an AEGD with co residents from other top programs, I can tell you that USC prepared us well.

Good Luck.

I like the sound of that. 👍

There is a better website floating around with all the nitty gritty, but I can't find the link at the moment. It is definitely in one of the many USC archived threads here on SDN. These links below give more of a superficial explanation:
