USC interview

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
When are you all going?

I feel pretty good about USC. Great school and an interesting program philosophy.

i applied there too, but the cost of the school is something to consider before attending.

When did you all submit? And how were you contacted? I'm really interested in USC!!

I submitted June 1st. I was notified last night about the interview, but unfortunately I had to turn it down. Best of luck! Hopefully you hear from them soon 😀

Received an e-mailyesterday around 6:30pm set for October 6th. See you guys there.

I'll be attending the interview, but I have some doubts because I've heard some bad things about USC in the previous years. I want to go to the interview as a chance to see if they have improved their operations.

do they accept a lot of their interviewees? Neither of my ADA books gives a number..

For those with interview invites, or even those who are patiently waiting like myself, did USC update your AADSAS Portal? Because for me, USC isn't even listed, or are they one of those schools that don't use portal.

mines not listed either. but how about your USC portal? does yours say invited for interview or something? mines still says under review

Status Application Received/Under Review

I guess they don't update AADSAS/USC Portal frequently, just the initial e-mail invite.

I have some friends who are D3s and D1s at USC right now, and they all have said that they absolutely love it. D3s definitely think that SC is going on an upward trend and that the program is much better now than it was a few years ago. I think it just takes a while for a school's reputation to turn back around after things have gone south. From what I've heard, PBL still exists to a degree but there are still lecture style classes as well... not 100% sure though.

Thanks a lot. Good to know.

USC has the chillest interview ever! So basically we're in groups and we start out answering questions we pick from a hat. Then we do the PBL session. Basically you don't want to over talk or not talk at all. If you over talk you are not being a team player and they don't like that. People complain that they don't have one on one time to explain why they want to be a dentist, but the adcom already knows who you are through your application and secondary. They just want to know how you work with other people. I know you guys hear a lot of crap about USC but the new dean is really focused on bringing the school back to how it was before. I love it here, but take everything you read here with a grain of salt. Good luck guys!

Where is everyone staying?? I've interviewed there before, and stayed at the vagabond inn that was really close but it was kinda sketchy....any other suggestions?? The radisson is 200/night...

No idea as of yet. I have to fly in from NC, hotel and rental car.

Looking like I will fly in on Tuesday the 25th in the PM, then fly out on Wednesday in the PM. I haven't heard of any "socials" going on..

What hotels are close?

Lookin at taking Delta out the evening Tuesday after classes, leaving to come back after interview evening of Wednesday. Flight back is red-eye, make it back for classes the next morning.

I got an interview invite today as well. Pretty excited! So far interviews at USC and Midwestern!

do they accept a lot of their interviewees? Neither of my ADA books gives a number..

In my interview there last year, we were told they accept about 50% of their interviewees. (I was a post-December interview so I don't know if that rate is higher for pre-December.) Good luck!

i heard from another individual that interviewees also received a letter stating that they would be put on the waiting list at the very least.. is this true?

Ya, I'm pretty sure no one gets flat out rejected from USC post interview. They don't really tell you anything, other than you are an "alternate". Once you are an alternate, I really don't think they have an order as to who will be chosen next for admission.. or at least you don't have any idea where on the wait list you are. This was from my experience 2 cycles ago..

FYI - flights just got cheaper.

I have arranged a flight from NC to LA and back and a rental car, for under $300.

Add in the hotel (staying at the Vagabond - yeah, heard it sucks, but its close) cost of $175.

See you all there!

So does that mean even if you are on the alternate list, your chance for receiving an acceptance is still pretty slim?

Yup, dskies is right. Everyone who gets interviewed gets put on the wait-list. They say you can get a phone call anytime up to 3 days after school starts because they even get drop-outs during orientation week. (A dental student there said in his admitting year, 5 people got called off the wait list the week school started!!) That said, I have no idea what the odds are of getting called off the wait-list. However, if you really want to know, there is a thread floating around somewhere called something like "Has anyone heard from USC lately??" from last cycle and lots of people there posted when they got called off the wait list.

You don't get rejected until well after school starts. I just got my rejection letter a few weeks ago...freaked out thinking it was for this year but then realized it was for last year's cycle. 😉

Wow that is crazy!!!!!!! lol.. thanks for the info tho! How did u like the interview by the way?

Hey everyone! keep your spirits high. USC is probably the only school that interviews late. Last year, I interviewed in February/March. I love USC because the faculty members and students are really helpful. You do have to teach yourself a lot though but I think that is everywhere. If you stay positive and active in your studies at USC, you should be fine. Start carving teeth out of wax now! Haha... 🙂 Let me know if anyone has any questions. Go Trojans!

At any school, if you dedicate yourself enough and study hard you'll do well and pass the boards.

I feel like what most people want to know is, how well does the school prepare you for it? I can probably skip undergraduate, study on the DATs myself straight out of high school and get a good score. However, I can say for sure attending a competitive undergraduate program has made it easier for me to study.

From what you have said, saying that you have to teach yourself a lot and should start carving teeth now (probably a joke...) but the point is, it shows that USC in fact doesn't do as well of a job preparing their students as they should.

Now, no way am I bashing on USC. I actually applied there myself. However, from what I've seen from other schools through interview, tours, and reading online, I feel like they do a better job in preparing the students to pass the boards and be clinically adept. I don't know if it was this thread, but USC has a board pass rate of 80% I think someone said? I had an interview a few days ago and I asked the interviewer and they had a pass rate of 95%+

The point is, not saying USC is a bad school. Just that their curriculum might not be as affective as other schools and I believe that is what most people are concerned about.

Hi there:

I agree with what you have to say. The efforts of my upper classmates who have already took boards states that they all passed the boards with flying colors. In addition, USC prepares you to do well clinically (this is very important in the future). Day one, we were handed a drill and learned to prepare caries. I know other schools don't start clinic until much later. Whatever it is.. do what you feel is best for you and your future. PBL isn't for EVERYONE but if you take what it has to offer, I am sure you will succeed on the boards and in life.

PBL blows. Are there any plans to get rid of it soon? Go Condoms!

It could be a long wait. The waiting list can outlast one's lifetime.

I'll be staying the night on Wednesday after the interviews and flying out Thursday.

Anyone else? Any interest in exploring the campus post interview, etc?

Anybody here going October 26? I'm flying in from Oregon late on the 25, getting a hotel. Flying back after the interview on the 26. Any idea on cab fare from LAX to USC?

No idea on cab fare, but if I remember, its either 15 miles or 15 minutes. LOL! I googled it cause I'm renting a car. Its a straight shot with a right hook into the school area.

From LAX to USC, the best way is to take the Prime Time Shuttle. It's $15 one way, and it's fast and reliable. You can book the trip online.

does it matter which set of papers we submit to them when we get there, the one they sent to us in the email or the one in the mail?

The reason I ask is that i filled out the secondary on the one they sent in the email because i have chicken scratch for handwriting lol and dont want to do it again...pchem is killing my butt in studying lol

I'm in exactly the same situation. Pchem is rough. Is the USC supplemental application pretty long? I haven't looked at it yet.

out of curiosity...what is your A for pchem? lol ours is an 80 and a 51 is a C...honestly a C never looked so good till this class :scared:

And their supplemental is gay...its a repeat from AADSAS and other filler stuff...i dont think it makes a difference as to which one you use but i just like to be sure

Just FYI....I'm a D3 at USC and passing rate is definitely not 80%. You have your facts wrong. It is definitely over 90%...less than 10 people failed out of 144.

I also think USC prepared me well for boards and the clinical classes are really great. You don't need to start carving teeth now by any means....

Feel free to ask me any questions you might have!

first interview for me. very happy 🙂

I wonder if this is their "second wave" group. They said they have 4 separate groups they interview and accept at different times.
