USC Interview

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just sent a whopping check for 1500....that's three step 1 board exams right?? Damn d-school is going to be expensive but you gotta have debt to kill debt.

Can anyone give me some housing info asap before the indigenous student population grabs em all. Anyone from the so cal area with the best scoop on where to live?? Thanks

when is the next round of acceptances??? 😕

Hey Vietho26
Eva said that she'll send out a packet with a bunch of paperworks maybe mid June. This will also include housing info. They can help you find roommates. If you want to live by yourself you can request an apartment listing from her and she'll mail it to ya

I just got the response email from Eva. She said she does not have any housing information, but I can check housing.usc.edu . There are many off-campus housing. In my opinion, it is quite expensive. FYI.

compugirl,
I believe you can send a letter expressing interest in the school but other than that they are going to accept more people after they see how many people return deposits by May 1 per Ryan.

It's kinda hard to find housing at this time of the year... Plus.. it is freaggin expensive if you want ok apartments... (2beds go up to 2800 dollars!!)
I live in a studio that costs 900dollars right now... 10 min walk to campus...

I recommend if you have a car, commute from downtown (nice apts for the same price) or Koreatown. However, the parking is very expensive here....

Parking permits costs almost 400 a semester....
and it goes on sale May 15th .. 8:30 am?? I think....
only online!
First come first serve.....

USC is an expensive place to live..... 🙁

It's getting late in the game, but I have an interview at USC this Friday the 30th, anyone else going to be there?

Hi jha. Are you a currently dental student at USC? Do you know where do the classmates usually live? Can I also ask do you think the laptop is necessary? Thanks for sharing.

I am actually an undergrad here at SC.

As far as I know...
I mean the dental students at SC that I know
Most people I know commute from places like Koreatown and Glendale, Santa Monica?....
I do not think many live nearby the campus (although I've seen some)... (b/c they're too expensive for their crappy states)
There also is a Delt Sig Delt House nearby the campus...(don't know much further about that...)

For laptops... I do not know..
But I'll definitely go and ask.. 🙂

Congrats...!

jha, thanks for the help! 🙂

No need for a lap top..
There's no class using lap top in a class..
But definitely need a computer

Two questions:

1. Are there more fellow classmates? Could you let us know if you get acceptance? It can give the idea to people who are still waiting.

2. Anyone knows if USC will consider us for scholarships? If yes, when can we know?

Thanks. 👍

One of my friends got a scholarship from USC. I heard that you don't have to apply for it....Once you are enrolled you are qualify for it. It's based on your file. I think the first week of school they will let you know if you got it or not. Eva said that USC didn't want to use scholarship as a tatic to lure students. I'm not sure if this is true...let me know
-toothfairy24

toothfairy24. I remember Eva said we don't have to apply it, too. If I remember correctly, we will know who gets the scholarship after $3,000 is submitted.

One more question:
Is it better to buy USC's dental student insurance? Is it a requirement? Does it mean we can only see the doctors on campus like HMO? Or it is more like PPO? Thanks.

I remember the students telling us that they find out after they start. They said that one day someone comes to class and calls out a few people to tell them that they have been awarded a scholarship. I don't know exactly how that works, they probably do it during orientation before people go to their PBL groups.

Any guys out there who are also going to USC Class of 2008- let me know if your looking for a roommate, we should all probably start getting in touch with each other if we're gonna find a decent place.

Hey guys... now that deposits were due on may 1st.. .anyone know if there are still openings and an idea of how many if any are left???? I'm praying for a miracle!

Health insurance? who needs health insurance?? How about if you are an M.D. yourself?? I don't want to pay 1000 per year for health insurance if I can diagnose myself. Besides that money is wasted to pay for the bad patients with diabetes type 2 who don't comply with their medication and diet. Medicare and Medicaid is loaded with fat diabetic americans who can't lay off the cheesecake and burgers. If there is a McDonalds by USC dental school than maybe you should get health insurance. All those long nights eating Big Macs is bound to screw up your salt intake.

Hi Dr. vietho26. You should be our class doctor and we should pay some part of the money to you instead of the hole. 😀
Now, I can understand many of my friends NEVER see doctors in the past two years, but the medical budget still goes up constantly every year. You are right. If diabete patients don't take medicine regularly and stop junk food, we will pay even more in the future.

But, the problem is: Can we stop that? 😱

hey guys... for those of you have already been accepted... how much time elapsed between your interview and receiving your acceptance letter? Anyone know if they were pulled off the waitlist? I'm anxiously STILL waiting to hear from them. if they dont want me, i wish they'd just tell me now, ya know?? sheesh.. oh well

Hey Sayaweh
I heard about a week after my app was finally complete. I interviewed there but had not have my letters of rec and transcripts in from college and med school. So I can't gauge exactly when you may hear but i heard April 15 via email after my interview on Feb 27. Hope that helps.

by the way is Sayaweh and indian name or a filipino name?
ANyway best of luck to you.

sayaweh01. I pm you.

hey guys,

i have not had time to post for sometime. i will be joining you guys at SC this fall... with working having been so busy, it just started to hit me that we're starting soon!!!!!

where are you guys planning on living?

one more question, how many people are going to fund some of the costs with private lenders? just wondering...

thanks!

Hey I seriously considering the research position to start on June 1. So that means I am in need of looking for a room/apt ASAP before the spots are filled up. I hear Koreatown is decent compared to living on campus. Any one with better ideas?

I'll be going to SC this fall as well.
Im going to LA next weekend (on the 14th) to check out some housing stuff and see if theres anything I like. So far, I'm leaning to an apt off campus under 4 miles away. It's a much better area and the commute is not that bad (about 10 min regardless of traffic) b/c you can go local or on the freeway. The rent is cheaper than around SC and the area MUCH NICER! not only that but the apartments are very nice and very clean, with full amenities (stuff that i'm use to getting after going to UCSD for 4 yrs). Also, the area is much better than Koreatown in terms of cleaniness and commute. So, if anyone else has any ideas or is interested in keeping in touch with me pm me so we can exchange numbers or something. My dad is even considering buying a condo or house... but that remains to be seen when we go down there and check out some of the places next week.

and...
just for some bckground on me..
23 yr old male from San Jose
graduated from UCSD in electrical engineering.
if you want to know anything more pm me.

Just for curiosity, I would like to also know some background on others who are starting in the fall with me.
Anyways, good luck in everything people!

So didn't USC finish the last of scheduled interviews on May 7th? It will be interesting to see what the timeline for acceptances is now.

May 7th was the last day. There were about 30 people there for the interview. Next acceptance round is the end of this week... Let's freak out together 😀

Eva said she will send out the orientation materials next week. Of course, the third payment will be due on 7/15.

I am going to take a look at three apartments on 5/14. Hopefully, I can find a good one.

Which apartments did you look at grettlin. There are some really nice ones but with a really high price. let me know what you found, im looking on monday

I had my interview last week, and didn't get any e-mail this week.
Maybe still on wait-list.

Do you guys know how often USC will review applicant's file until the class is full?

I really wanna get in there.

help~

tataDDS. I am still looking for the apartment. I basically search the area in West LA. I know the price is high and it is about $1,050/month. However, comparing to the quality, price, and security issues, I would rather drive to school. I will definitely let you know if I can find a good one.

West LA? If so, please feel free to check out my post on housing forum.
I have a condo there.
Let me know if you are interested.
I have got people interested already, so you may want to contact me soon.

Scrooge and other USC classmates....

Hey ya! I'll be joining you this fall at SC. Background on me:
21 year old female from San diego
Just graduated UCSD with a Biochem/Cell Bio degree

I read a few more posts from USC acceptees, but I couldnt get any information on them. I'd really love it if the other USC acceptees could share some info about themselves. Also, does anybody know how on-campus housing is? I'm not sure if I want to live on campus or off and commute, considering the reputation that the neighborhood has. Thanks!

Man I'm jealous. I commute around 4 hours total a day now and looking for a place closer to school. I will get a nice 2 bed apt for $1650 but a 35 min commute to school...and thats a bargain

ecdoesit. I tried to find your post in housing forum, but I couldn't find that. How many bed rooms of your condo are? And, does it locate at Westwood?
Thanks.

Hi libraxchik. I do not specifically answer your question in mail message, but I would do it as the following. I received my BS and MS in Computer Science, and I worked four years as project consultant. Now, I am taking courses in Cal State Fullerton. I would like to know if most of you take many upper biology courses, like micro, biochem, anatomy, physiology, and histology? Since it is PBL in USC, do you guys have any idea how to cooperate with team members under the consideration that not everyone ever took the same courses?

Hey Libra...

I graduated from UCSD this past fall as well in Electrical eng. Whats ur name- maybe we've met in the Pre-dent club or something.
And i'm also pretty excited to start in the fall. Although, a little worried about how the PBL program is going to work out. ALthough I am glad that the first year isnt too crazy (from what I heard at the interview). I just feel that it could get tough researching everything on our own... although I KNOW it will help me learn a lot better than just passively listening to a lecture 5 hrs a day. I'm sure all of us will get pretty close at USC because we're going to be doing a lot of work together on these cases.

Send me a Private message if any of u guys want to talk/ swap emails etc..

Hey Libra ..and everyone...

I graduated from UCLA last year with a degree in physiological science. I have been working this past year in investment banking... and I cannot wait to start dental school. I have heard AWESOME stuff about SC, especially from recent grads. The only thing that there is little experience with is the PBL program. For myself, I was not much of a lecture person at UCLA, especially considering the class sizes there. I did better in classes where I studied on my own. So, this is going to be quite interesting. Personally, I had enough of UCLA. I want a change, a new school, and new networking opportunities.

As far as living, I would recommend for those willing to commute to check out areas like Glendale, Alhambra, Pasadena, and Los Feliz. Slightly more affordable (i.e., studios in Glendale around 650.00-800.00). I am going to move to Glendale in July.

PM me if you guys want to exchange emails/instant messengers...

Oh, check out www.westsiderentals.com...

Talk to you soon!

Grettlin,

As biology majors, we are required to take upper division courses such as microbiology, etc. but to my understanding, a lot of PBL requires outside research in textbooks/medical journals. I would think that knowledge of general biology (which is a requirement for entry into USCSD) would be sufficient to contribute to the PBL group sessions. Otherwise, I think the rest is research and subsequent team sessions are based on the research that each group member has done. That's just my opinion, but I would think that USC takes that into consideration. Hope that helps. 🙂

Hey everyone,

I got an email acceptance last week and I'm stuck in a tough decision!! I had my sights set on Temple in Philadelphia (solid program, great clinical school) but since I'm from SoCal, USC is very tempting. I'm not sure I'll be good in a PBL curriculum. I still don't have a clear idea of what the PBL curriculum is. So microbio, biochem, etc is molded into the case studies with no lecture?? How are the exam formats? What do you guys think about tuition/loans? I guess tuition doesn't matter if you are happy where you are. A student told me that their clinic portion is always changing. I'm just worried because when i was interviewing couple students were whispering "don't do it, don't come here". I want to make the best decision so that I can graduate as a competant dentist.

Thanks.

Osushi Girl,
Well congrats on ur acceptance.
It's funny you were considering Temple. Richmond, VA is just like Philly but it is ten times bigger in Philly and so I am kind of sick of Richmond, VA and definitely chose USC for the area and weather. I don't know how dental school is like but living on the east coast during winter weather and rainy gray skies sure made med school quite depressing. I haven't even seen Norfolk or Virginia Beach while I was on the east coast.
I don't want to discourage you from going to Temple though(great and oldest oral surgery program supposedly), but the biggest reason I turned down Temple was the area and I just felt like "been there, done that, no thank you!!" Next to that I really got tired of being lectured to in med school. The only time I really learned anything was sitting down with friends and hammering the stuff away. Professors may know alot but they lecture from a too high level and always talk in a way to put you to sleep. Not all profs did that but the majority did. So good luck with ur decision. Maybe we will see you next Fall.
Best,
Viet

Osushi Girl,

Vietho has a few good points in his reply to you. Concerning the student comments during your interview...To my understanding, USC's PBL program requires a lot of self-motivated studying since there are no traditional lectures to attend. A few 1st year USC students from my interview said that if you are a self-motivated student, you will succeed in the PBL program. So according to them students who arent able to be self-starters dislike the program and don't do so well. If you enjoy the traditional lecture-exam curriculum of most schools, I'd say Temple is for you. That is a huge reason why I chose USC over other schools. I've always hated sitting through lectures and trying to regurgitate random facts from the professor's lecture. I would spend countless hours with other students pounding through flashcards and lecture notes afterwards, anyway. I hope that gives you a little insight on things. Best of luck to you!

Thanks everyone for your input! I actually visited the campus today at 10 am and spoke to couple students there. A 3rd year student gave me a run down of how a typical case study is worked out and it definitely relieved some of confusion I had! couple more days to decide....

I do have one thing to add though which I think is very important and could dispell some of the skepticism of PBL learning. When I rotated on internal medicine at the VA Medical Center we had alot of topics to cover but a small student group of 12 students (entire class is 170+). We had a case of a patient with cancer and hypercalcemia that they asked a student to present. There were two doctors in the conference room and a chief medicine resident who oversaw what the student was writing on the board. The chief resident later asked each one of us to come up with a differential diagnosis and then we all spent about 30 minutes coming up with possible ways to eliminate certain theories and later focus on one single treatment and test plan.
In the end the resident and two guest doctors explained what we did wrong and did right in coming up with out diagnosis and practically forced us to rethink our approach. But overall, we all ended up coming out of that conference room knowing much more about high calcium levels and how they tend to elevate during the process of cancer. When it came to boards I still remembered that lesson as if I had learned it just yesterday.

So PBL if it is anything like the case study we had at the VA is a more direct and active way of learning and it is very difficult to skip when they take role of the 12 students on the sign up sheet. If we were to miss any case studies the medicine director would know and make us come to another case study during a call day so we don't miss our lesson.

vietho26, very good point! That is what I expect for PBL.
For USC, as I know, all members will discuss the first fact together, and each member will find out as much information as possible for the assigned topic. Then, everyone will have 7 copies of information from other members, and you can go home to study.
If you have question, you can contact your members or study the text.

I personally think PBL is a good way to learn. That's why I choose USC instead of other schools with traditional curriculum.

By the way, USC is a famous clinic school as Temple.

I just talked to Eva today. She said the next acceptance letters will be sent after or on June 1. However, it depends on if these students send their deposits. If all students send the money, then they won't send new acceptance letters. The class is near full at this point, but she does not expect all students will choose USC. So, for those who are waiting, don't give up.

hi!

I've decided to stay close to home so I'll be joining you guys this fall at 'SC. see y'all in august. 😀

if anyone is interested in carpooling from the torrance area, lemme know.

congrats osushi girl,

One big Trojan family. I really hope our class breaks another national average for the record books. Give UCLA dental a run for its reputation. See you in the fall.

What a surprise...just got an acceptance from USC. 😎

I have two weeks to ponder the decision.
