hey everyone,
I have already payed the deposit for USC and just got off the alternate list for UCSF. I live in West Los Angeles so I feel I have a tough decision. I know the big difference bw the two schools is $$$ but other than that I was wondering if anyone has any advice on what school to choose?
thanks

If you like PBL and easy life style, go with USC. Otherwise, it doesn't make any sense to turn down UCSF, which is great blend of clinic and research.

Oh my god bro. UCSF for sure. I think you should try San Francisco, you might like it.

Think about it, an this is note out of bias because I've already been accepted to SC. You already live in LA, if you move to San Francisco, the cost of living will approximate the expenses you'll pay at SC. SC's clinics, SimLab are awesome and pretty geared towards the clinic. UCSF clinics, labs etc., are pretty old and obscure. Unless you want to be a researcher, I would recommend UCSF, otherwise SC would be a perfect fit for you. Best of luck man! 👍

Yes, money is definitely a big difference between the two schools, but there are many other major differences between them as well. UCSF's curriculum has been well established for decades and decades and has gained a lot of prestige. Their system undoubtedly produces some of the best dentists in the country. USC, on the other hand, has recently instituted its problem-based learning program that has received some VERY mixed reviews. I have spoken to many students in the program who felt that they lacked many fundamental principles that were otherwise provided through a traditional lecture format. There are absolutely ZERO lectures in their system. You basically teach yourself. It's really tough to say what type of dentists this program will ultimately produce. It's in its early stages and thus cannot be considered anything more than experimental. In terms of the area, I'm not too sure how safe/fun the area around UCSF is. But I'm sure you know the area around USC is nothing less than, well, ghetto, for lack of a better term. I've done my research and I know students at both schools. UCSF is very good both didacticly and clinically. It is also pass/fail so its not as stressful = less competition. Students at UCSF seem much happier and content with their decision to attend that school. I didn't get the same sentiments from the USC students. Some of them just seem downright bitter and regretful. Hope that helps!

Do not miss your opportunity to study one the premier dental institutions over one the very dregs of the dental world over a little money. Go with UCSF no contest my friend. Anyone who tells you different is actually still on the waiting list, looking to leave USC (or wherever they claim to be) for your seat at UCSF! True advice will only be to choose SF.

I totally agree with paolorossifan......the best advice would be ucsf...if you want the highest quality dental education with some amazing faculty memebers.

Thanks for the advice so far and I can see that most of you recommend UCSF, but one thing I wasn't impressed by during my interview was the attitude of SF students had about the school. They didn't hate the school but they were far from loving it.

My tour guide during the interview, who also went to UCLA for undergrad, said if you like women, stay out of SF. He went on to tell me that most chicks, not only in UCSF but san fran in general, are hideous and don't wear makeup. I mean I am all about the environment and being natural but he said even at the bars and clubs they are disgusting. Basically, no comparison to all the beautiful ladies out in southern cali. And he went on to say that everyone is kind of boring around town and school because UCSF has no undergrad, strictly grad. Totally, opposite of USC!

And even though it is pass/fail it seemed like they were killing themselves. I already went to UCLA for four years so I know how it is to compete and I definitely want the opposite in dental school!

What are the exact price differences of the two schools. I have heard it comes out to a whopping $200g's less to go to SF! Thats like two years of work! Then I have also heard that living in SF is expensive. ???

I am going to visit this weekend to get a better idea of the area. It is wierd how San Francisco, though in the same state, is a like a completely different country from Los Angeles.

Are you seriously making the quality of "chicks" in the surrounding areas a factor in choosing which dental school to attend??

What do you think of the quality of education at the two schools?

By the way, my friend at UCSF said the price difference is about $150,000.

I feel that all dental schools will prepare you well and the other factors are very improtant so YES quality of chicks is essential for four years!

Hands down UCSF. The price, the name, the proven education. When I interviewed at USC I was flat out told by some of the students to go elsewhere. Plus San Francisco is sooooo much better than the area around USC (and LA in general in my opinion). As far as pretty girls, it's probably true that there aren't as many at UCSF since it lacks an undergrad, but there is certainly no shortage in the city... I'm from SF, and I definitely don't consider myself hideous... And again the hottness of the surrounding women should not be playing a factor in your decision...

go to UOP hands down....ohhh wait.... nm 🙂

yeah, both school is doing PBL why do you think USC only has a problem with fundamental problems?

I don't get it.

Go for UCSF for conservative opinion and I personally think UCSF is well balanced but both school have apparently different academic envirionment. Hhehe, I can take private pipe organ lesson in community college while I am in first year USC but not in UCSF. Ha Ha! It doesn't mean that USC is easier but USC has a flexiblity in schedule.

And yes I am on the waiting list in UCSF too and I deposited to USC since I live in LA.

Good luck with you and congratulations!

P.S.

I think SF is very different from LA. I've been there total 5 times but whenever I visit SF wow. what a different city it is!

I am not trying to persuade you away from UCSF. Just a few points you should consider before making your decision. UCSF just had its entire curriculum revamp last year. So, no one really knows how good that is. And even though with pass/fail system, you still have to work your a$h off to pass.

I forgot to mention. 40% of the UCSF class last year scored 90 and above on the Boards Part 1. Not bad for having their system revamped. Pretty insane eh?

those board scores make a pretty compelling argument in favor of UCSF's curriculum, revamped or not. Does anyone know of a website or place where I can find the part 1 scores for various schools?

Current students from UCLA and UCSF might complain, but most of them would never give up their spot or go to another school....

Give me your UCSF spot, I'll make sure you have one high quality chick every week!

Every dental student complains. You will too, regardless of which school you end up choosing. Exams, classes, patients, requirements, classmates, faculty, staff - there is a lot in dental school you can complain about.

Personally, you couldn't pay me to live in southern California....granted I wouldn't want to live IN San Francisco either, but if I had to make the choice between the two it would be UCSF all the way simply because of a better location.

I would shoot myself in the foot, run that foot through a grinder, throw hot acid onto the same foot, and then die of pain before I had to live in Indiana :meanie:

I agree...I'd rather dip my nuts in brown gravy and wave them in front of a wolverine that happens to be high on PCP than have to live in Indiana after I get out of dental school (and the only way I will stay here for dental school is if I get rejected by every other school I apply to). The only reason I haven't left already is because undergrad is so ridiculously cheap here and I don't want to have to wait to qualify for in-state someone where else.

How do you guys find out board score result?

Isn't it confidential?

😱

A dental student from UCSF told me so. He and his friends all scored above 90 and estimates that 40% of the class scored above 90 as well.

So misterious, it seems your position came to me :scared:

Now I have to make a decision.

Arrrrgggg! I agree with you goomba it is hard to choose since I like USC.
