Hey guys... I know this isn't really the place for this..
I'm going to be a freshman at USC in the fall and I was just wondering what courses those of you that attended USC have taken for med.
As USC's doesnt allow for the traditional Bio, chem, writing, calc in the first year becuase of a social issues class bound to the writing course.

Anyways thanks..

Sure it's the place for this. This is, after all, the pre-med forum.

You should visit the pre-Health advising office after you start school, or when you go to orientation. It is a small white building called CAS, which is across from Taper Hall. If you don't know where that is, you will learn very soon. 🙂 They have all the information about what exact classes at USC you have to take. But make sure you take their application advice with a grain of salt. They aren't always the most helpful or encouraging. 🙄

You DON'T have to take all that stuff during your first year. You can take your premed requirements whenever you can fit them in, provided you take them before the MCAT (for example, I didn't finish chem until the end of my sophomore year). If you can, just take bio and chem during your first year, along with the social issues/writing thing (have fun, that's a real blast 😛 😀 ) during your first semester, and then take calc or whatever during your second semester. Or wait and take calc later; you don't need it for the MCAT and you don't even need to take it to get into a lot of med schools.

If you have more questions about anything USC or premed related I'd be glad to help you out. You can always PM me, too. Good luck!

yeah i registered for bio, chem, writing, and something on law and politics (I really wanted the class on religion and ethics.. but this will do fine)

Also, when did you end up doing your for lang requirement?

BTW... I did talk with the advisors for pre-health.. i just was wondering you guys did or are doing.. thanks again

I wasn't a B.A. or B.S. candidate so I didn't have the language requirement. 🙂 Your advisor would be able to tell you when to take that though.

Take Spanish.

Yeah I am taking spanish.. only a semester though becuase I placed out of two of the three required semesters

Hi, your taking a class on law, politics, and public policy with Prof. Barnes. A very good social issues class, you'll learn alot. It certainly reaffirmed my beliefs that lawyers are society's parasites, sucking money off other people's misfortunes. It left me with the clear impression that I should go for a health profession. Do not skip the lectures for this class, they are extremely important. Your first semester schedule is identical to my freshman one. It's alot of work, good luck.

My best friends is going to USC and, although I did not apply, when I went with them to their orientation (on the way to visit my college), it seems that USC does keep really good care of their students. The tour guide that we were with talked about her experiences with close interaction with profs, like the 1on1 lunch program they do which really impressed me. (Afterwards, I proceeded to bang my head on the wall for not applying :\)

Unless you are travelling abroad, which I strongly suggest you do, you have three years pretty much to get everything done. Plus, don't forget summer school !

Good luck and have fun
