awesome residents - friendly, knowledgeable and down to earth.. the resident i worked with got USC's "resident of the year award".. it's an award decided by the medical students.. awesome dude.. and well deserved..,
faculty can be hit or miss.. one the best faculty members (Dr. Mark Chamberlain) just recently left to take a position in florida.. i believe it's at the university of florida..
for the most part, it's a pretty benign program
hospital is a zoo.. needless to say, being at county program.. you will see lots of pathology
ancillary staff can suck..
must know spanish
program is in transition since their legendary chair stepped down (Dr. Leslie Weiner).. however, Dr. Helena Chui seems definitely apt to change USC Neurology for the better.. USC has always been very strong clinically.. hence, Dr. Chui is trying to drive USC towards a more academic setting.. she's very approachable and i've been able to contact her whenever I had any questions.. heck.. she once had extra tickets to a Dodgers game and she asked me at the last minute if i wanted to go.. so i got to take a buddy of mine and kick it with the chair of neurology and her son.. very cool.. 👍
now why didn't i feel like staying at USC?? a major part of me wanted to leave california.. i was in california for 26+ years.. and a change of scenery was needed for me to grow as a person.. additionally.. at the time.. USC only had 2 open spots because of an imbalance in residents.. that however has been fixed.. i talked extensively with Dr. Chui about the problem.. and she fixed it.. i felt she let me have a lot of input in what i believe was needed to improve the program at USC.. i believe this incoming class will have 4 residents.. lastly.. i personally believe i can gain a better education if i went outside of california.. my top 4 schools on my rank list were all outside of california.. however... if i wanted to stay in california.. i would have ranked USC my number one..
i'm happy to be at miami jackson memorial hospital.. in many respects.. it's probably like USC except it's probably a lot busier.. i say probably because i won't know until i start in a few weeks.. but it has a predominant spanish speaking population.. lots of pathology.. grateful patients.. and i expect a total zoo which will overwhelm this lowly intern.. 😉
