might as well make this the official question thread. i have a few...

1. are acceptance letters personalized beyond my name?
2. who do you address the deposit to in your check?
3. do you need to send a FAFSA with actual numbers or are estimates ok?
4. how is usc's matchlist for more competitive residencies in california such as surgery or ophthalmology, especially in comparison to respected out-of-state medical schools?
5. when is second look?

gracias.

Hi X,

I'll be a 3rd year at USC Keck next year. This is an amazing med school, and you'll love it here 😀 I live in an area called Montery Hills that borders against South Pasadena. A large percentage of the med students live here. Other students live in Alhambra, South Pasadena, Pasadena, and tons of other places. Most of the apartments and condos here in Monterey Hills are really nice. A good two bedroom condo will cost betwen $1200 and $1800 a month. It is a 5 minute drive to campus, 10 with morning traffic. Safety really isn't a concern, but the surrounding area isn't all that great. Common street smarts will go a long way. If you have any questions, please feel free to message me at any time. Congrats on your acceptance.

Mike

1. Mine wasn't, but maybe it's just because I'm not special 🙂

2. Don't they tell you who to address it to? "USC" will probably work.

3. Estimates are generally ok.

4. Don't worry about matchlists. Get good grades, do good research, score well on the Step 1, and you'll make whatever residency you want. It's not generally a person's choice of med school that keeps him/her out of competitive residencies, it's how he/she did at that particular med school and on the boards. IIRC 3/4 of last year's grads matched into programs in CA.

5. No idea.

I agree with SCIRonmike on those answers. I called them about the check thing, they said to make it out to "keck school of medicine."

Thanks Mike. I will PM you with questions later on this week, thanks for the offer.

I rarely come on SDN, only when my little bro tells me to check out a thread. If you want to talk to me, e-mail me at [email protected]. Thanks.

Dr. Garner also has not scheduled any popcorn and movie sessions. 😱

You had better start studying for the boards. We are going to VERY pissed at you guys if you don't do well.

And might I second the Monterrey Hills. It's a great place. A little bit boring, but definately the nicest place I have ever lived at.

I figured I could give all of you incoming people some information about the timeline. I know I loved getting all the info I could.
(This is what happened last year)
The next time you will hear from us will be about the end of April. We will send you an E-vite to the second look weekend. You will then pick your three top choices for programs at USC, and at the second look weekend you will be given a tour of that program. I would recommend picking a surgery of some sort because those people got free scrubs. There will also be a big lunch out in the quad. (Those things are pretty cool. We get a HUGE one like every month or so)

The next time you will here from them would be about June 1st. They will send you packets at the start of each month with information. I forgot what information was in each packet, but one of the most important things it will deal with is housing. You will get about 6 housing sheets in the mail with people advertising housing, looking for housing, etc, etc. A lot (~70%) of people find roommates this way. You will probably be able to get a good two bedroom for about 1200-1500 tops.

Also, in one of the letters you will get a packet from Salerni (A USC alumni type association) which is basically a guide to med school. (where to live, how to study for the courses, etc)

But back to where to live. There are three main places where students live. Monterrey hills (highest concentration), South Pasadena, and Pasadena. Here are my pluses and minuses for each place.

Monterrey hills: This is a group of condos on top of a hill 3 miles north of the campus. These are the nicest apartments of the three and also the closest to the school by far. Without traffic, you can get to school in 6 minutes. Also every apartment complex has a pool, hottub, and most have a pretty good workout room. Apartments are about 1200-1500 for a two bedroom. I currently am living in a three bedroom for 1500$ (great deal). It is also the closest to downtown LA, which if you enjoy the nightlife in LA is very important. It's still a 20 minutes drive, but it is better than the other places.

The bad side to Monterey hills is that there is nothing in the immidiate area. The nearest grocery is about 4 miles away, and I have to go to Pasadena to go to the gym. Also, there are no young people who live there outside of USC students.

Pasadena and South Pas I'll lump in together. Both places are more of a housing type place. Some people rent out houses, but the apartments arn't normally in an complex, and don't have a pool or hottub normally. They are slightly less expensive than Monterrey hills, but it can take up to 25 minutes to get to school with traffic.

The good news about these places is that there is good stuff right around it. There are a few local bars, old town Pasadena, and most class events are held around this area. Some more bad news about Pasadena, is that it doesn't have a freeway to connect it to Los Angeles. So if you want to go to a club in LA or something it in, it would take you abotu 40 minutes to get to Hollywood.

So you can prolly tell where I live by this description. And I love it there. Wouldn't want to live anywhere else (staying there next year)
As for finding housing, I would recommend just waiting til the lists come out, and finding someone to live with. (Or find them at the second look weekend) Then go to those three areas, figure out what you want the most, and rent from there. One warning is that Monterrey hills apartments tend to fill up pretty fast, so you really need to find a place there by July. (If you want a phone number for a realtor who specializes in renting out Monterrey hills, just PM me) If you are from out of town, and someone else is doing the looking for you, you can't go wrong with any place in the Hills.

Ok, off to play video games. ("spring" break)

Oh yeah, one more bit of advice. Don't buy any books. You don't need any of them. Here is a list of books that you will need (up through Hemetology). Keep it and only buy these books.

Concise Pathology by Chandrosume and Taylor
The immunology book they recommend (~130 page one)

And for Gross anatomy you will need:

Grants Disector
Lachman's case studies
Frank Netter (Which you will get for free for signing up for AMA, so hold off on this)

And I highly recommend (not needed) Rohen's Atlas. These are actual discections. Also Chung's anatomy, which will tell you the most tested stuff and give you ton's of practice questions.

Outside of this most books they recommend are utterly useless. Maybe buy First Aid, and while you are going through the material, look at it so you know what is really important.

I definitely agree with not buying all the books as our notes are so thorough that reading books would just be a waste of time. The books that I used A LOT were Netter and Moore and Agur. Moore and Agur was the most used book in the 1st year. That maybe different for current first years. I also used Kerr's Microanatomy book a whole bunch. Slides in Kerr are often the ones that are tested. I did not get Chandrosoma and Taylor. I bought, but never used, the Immunology book by Janeway or something like that.

Do you know the approximate dates for the second look weekend?
About May 27th.
But I totally forgot about the Moore and Agur book. That's definately neccesary.
As for concise Path, the test is open book and you can't do the test without it (At least we couldn't). Maybe that's why the second years were always saying that test is so hard, because they didn't have the book.

That was a book that we were supposed to buy too. We had the same open book path test, but I did it without the textbook and still did well.

the second look weekend is after the may 15th decision time?? Hmmmm

Second look. LOL! Word through the grapevine is that USC is all set to finalize plans to plow down the Norris library, Bishop, McKibben, and Mudd in order to put up new state of the art facilities for the med school. This would be in addition to expanding the campus down to Mission over the juvenile hall and current parking lot. So maybe you guys should take a "second look" at the other buildings on campus and perhaps the main USC campus too. Word also is that the new Zilkha Neurogenetics Institute has successfully recruited Senyon Choe.
