During the interview, I recall them telling us that we will have homework over the summe (knowing the top 100 or 200 drugs)? Did anyone get any info on that?

yeah apparently we get a top 200 drug list with a bunch of info about each one. I got the one from last year thru a friend but haven't got the one for this year.

Its not out yet guys.. go back to sleep.

yes... there is summer homework. its easy. i suggest you guys split up the list. last year... about 20 SDNers split the work. ten drugs per person. easy. 😀

Wait, then what is the hw? I thought we got a list of the top 200 and had to memorize it, but if its something where we can all split up the work then obviously it's not memorizing info on all 200.

I thought we have to look up the information about the drugs ourselves though and thats why you would split it up - or am I wrong?

Sounds like thats what it probly is. I assumed they were just gonna give us a list of 200 with all the info and we start memorizing. We could split that up pretty easy, if everyone trusts everyone else here  🙂

^ yes that is what you have to do. The first 100 drugs will be tested the 1st semester and the next 101 to 200 will be tested the 2nd semester.

Remind me to send you guys the template to organize the drugs.

so i heard that more info will be given out at the welcome reception and we will probably be receiving the HW in July... am i correct?

^ to put it short: usc will send you the list of the top 200 drugs with a chart and you guys are expected to fill in the boxes for generic, indication, strength, dosage, etc.

Oh joy.. Hey BMBiology and zenguppy - where did you all go to to find out about the drug's info? Did you go to the drug companies' sites? Or is there a spiffy little site that has everything down for us?

So, I trust all you wonderful people to do some of my homework for me 😀 I know I am up for it and I just got a PM from R2_D2 about doing it as well.. and I know quite a few non-SDN people that are interested. I'm pretty sure we can split it up and get it down to <10 drugs/person. Anyone else?

duh! me! I'm all for working smarter.. not harder! 🙂

we're soooo nerdy! we're preparing for hw that isnt even assigned to us yet!

um.. It's more like.. let's chill and not worry about this until we actually know what we have to do otherwise we're gonna do the work twice, or do it for nothing! smarter.. not harder people! 🙂

count me in for the HW too .. hehe 😛

you can check out Drug Facts and Comparison, Physcian Desk Reference, those two are good guides. Also check out online websites. Here are a few to get you started.

anyone going to the welcome reception on the 28th? I hope to see you guys there. I think i have to give a speech or something. i dunno. anyhow... come find me and introduce yourselves. It would be nice to meet fellow SDNers.

I want in as well 😉

relax for the moment.....the second 100 of drugs was given to us with the answer key since there were a lot of issues with people getting info from different sources, perhaps you guys will receive the answer key in mail also....enjoy the summer

Me! I'm going to the welcome reception 😍

In that case I'm going to pray for an answer key.. 🙂

Nothing was said about the summer hw.

Financial aid said they would be completed in 2-3 weeks.

HW is here. The chart is completely filled out for us already 🙂 We have to know the first 100 drugs by the end of summer. So what happens to the people who are not accepted until the first week of school? Will they be given more time?

I remember someone saying that the exam won't be on the first day of class or anything... so yes they will have time. But I may be wrong..

got the HW, nice of them to give us all the information... even anatomy didn't seem like this much raw memorization. 😱 If anyone has any interesting tips on speeding up the memorization process please add here!

Any chance any of you would like to post the drug information for those at other schools? I always wonder what is most important to learn about each of the drugs. (I know, everything, huh?)

it'd be kinda hard, they mailed us charts, so it's not over the computer. But I do have an excel file of the top200 drugs they gave to last year's class (obviously its not the same as this years top200) if you want that. PM me if u would like.

Here are some more good news....for the past several years, during the orientation week, Dr. Baron announced that the drug quiz is not actually on the first week of classes. Ours was on October 8, so it's highly likely that it will be postponed. Just imagine if you are accepted the week of orientation, how unfair would that be that you have to memorize everything in a week.
I think the best way to study is to divide the drugs into therapeutic classes, and memorize by the classes, since the doses are usually similar within the class. Good luck everyone....

It's honestly not that hard to memorize...i did the second 100 in i think a little over a week...you can do 10 a day easily.

thanks for the tip tanyas!!!

I think they should have included a pronunciation key with this!!

I've never heard of some of these drugs b4 so I wouldnt know which syllables to STRESS.. wouldn't it be a trip if this was an ORAL exam? hahahah

Yeah.. there must be a pronounciation guide somewhere.. Some of these generics are tough to say..

Last year when we divided the drugs between the SDNers since we did not have the key, we typed in the drugs on webmd.com and obtained the pronunciation from there

Thanks for all the help Tanyas 👍

By the way, if you guys are interested in seeing your fall class schedule, PM me your e-mail address...USC sent us a chart with the schedule for all 3 years on it. I also receive a lot of e-mails about housing openings, so if anyone is interested, I can forward it to you

FYI - #79 is spelled incorrectly - its actually Restoril - not Restotil.

I still have not received the summer homework yet. Should I be worried?

Can someone explain something to me

In the hw...

For example - Desyrel (#77 of our Top 100 list)
It says "Directions: 25-150 mg/day"

However, a second reference (The Tarascon Pocket Pharmacopoeia 2004) gives this: "Start 50-150 mg/day PO in divided doses, increase by 50 mg/day q3-4 days. Usual effective dose is 400-600 mg/day in divided doses."

How does all that translate to just "25-150 mg/day"

I would assume (concisely) that it should be 50-600mg/day instead of 25-150??

Am I using an inappropriate source.. outdated because it's a 2004 edition.. or is the handout directions a little off? Just need to connect the dots in my brain!! THANKS!

I'm wondering if maybe the recommended dose has changed since that book, because I have a PDR Pocket Guide to Prescription Drugs from 2003 that gives a different description (although close) to yours...

"The usual starting dosage is a total of 150mg/day, divided into 2 or more smaller doses. Your doc may increase your dose by 50mg/day every 3 or 4 days. Total dosage should not exceed 400mg/day, divided into smaller doses."

just double checking...we dont' need to memorize the auxiliary label information on the hw rite?

Right, no auxiliary label info.
But it's interesting that Evista (#59) is indicated for postmenopausal women, but the instructions say to avoid in pregnancy...

Oh y'all.. stop it with this summer HW stuff....

Tell Mel to let you guys off the hook. :meanie:

One other question abt the summer hw (sorry keke) but you know on the "drug sample quiz" they sent out to us...is that exactly how we're gonna be tested on the "dosing forms, strength" section? I'm wondering if that means that we don't need to know the directions of teh drug such as how many times/day etc. Does anyone know ? thanks!

If you look at the exact wording of that column, it has the words DIRECTIONS on there. I'd learn them anyway.. you will have to sooner or later!

Has anyone received info about orientation yet?
