USC versus UCI or UCD

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'd rank them UCLA > UCD > UCI > USC. I know USC is supposed to be a decent school but the $34K/year really lowers their ranking on my list. If they were as cheap as the UCs, I'd probably have them ranked somewhere around Davis.

since i have no money...

ucla, davis (but the gap between these two is very small), uci, then usc like the above...

however if i had money...

i would prolly just flipflop usc and irvine. this is pretty tough. afterall my goal was to somehow squeak into a cali school...never really put in too much thought about which schools would be cool to go to because most are awesome.

but yeah. what awesome position to be in if someone had a choice between all those schools.

Funding aside,
UCLA > USC > UCD > UCI

LA followed by Davis and Irvine (these 2 are pretty similar) with usc at the bottom cause of the cost (more around 50k when ya factor in living)

If it wasn't for the cost, I would rank:

UCLA > USC > UCI > > > > UCD.

I get so bored just thinking about living in Davis. Maybe I'm biased, but I didn't even turn in the secondary to UCD.

I like USC much more than UCLA, but the higher ranked institution will help when trying to get a competitive residency program.

I liked UCSD more than UCLA, but the 8+ hours of lec/day would probably make me rank them between USC and UCI (cost aside).

Personally I'll worry about it once I'm accepted to some of these places.

I'd say USC>UCI>UCD. Cause USC's the only one that decided to interview me!!! I like em if they like me. Period.

I actually like USC better.. by the time you're out of clinicals I hear it feels like you did two years of residency and you call other medschool students "kids." I hear UCI students that meander up over there have a hard time with it.

I've concluded you'll be studying pretty hard in med school so it won't matter too much what the surrounding city (if any) will be. The weather is a factor for me though. I can't imagine waking up and spending 30 minutes digging my car out from the snow.

As for UCSD's 8 hours of lecture a day, that's not true. I know UCSD med students and many of them feel like the lectures are more optional (similar to other schools.)

Eeek now i'm in at UCI and UCSD and I'm at USC today and I'm feeling like I"ll get in here too. Which would you choose and why? I haven't been lucky enough to interview at SF or LA, obviously that would make the choice easier.

I have it on a very good source that the UC's tuition will be 20K next year, while ours will be 36K. My rankings cost aside:

If you want to be a researcher or teach at a school:

UCLA>UCSD>USC>UCI>UCD

If you want to practice medicine primarily:

USC>UCLA>UCI=UCD>UCSD

I am biased for UCI over UCD because I love Southern California.
UCSD is so low because of the 32 hours +4 hours elective time in class each week.

Factoring in cost without any scholies at all:

If you want to be a researcher or teach at a school:

UCLA>UCSD>USC>UCI=UCD

If you want to practice medicine primarily:

UCLA>USC>UCI=UCD>UCSD

PS technically, we are Keck School of Medicine at University of Souther California. And here is a thread where I talk about some of the things happening here that definately (IMHO) sets us above UCI/UCD

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=88524

UCSD is building a bunch of buildings for research right now, too, but their efforts arn't as successful as ours is going. As of last year, we were 20 Mil behind them in NIH funding. 3 years ago we were 82 Million behind them. I think within the next 2-3 years we should pass them.

UCs are going upto 20K next year??

Does UCSD really have THAT many hours, I have down from my interview that is was more like 24 a week. Granted, I know this is more than many other schools but they also have very high board scores and a 100% pass rate some years.

Also there are 3 student run free clinics which seem great for clinical experience in underserved San Diego. Its not the LA County Hospital I just walked through but are the students at UCSD really that focused on research??

PS um there's no way UCs are going up to 20K, that's ridiculous. They'd HAVE to have told me this already in my acceptance packets....!

I disagree with the statement that it doesn't really matter what town you live in for med school as you will be "too busy" studying. I think the town I'm in has played a big factor in my happiness/health in my first semester of med school. And truthfully, I only really study on the weekends so when you're out of class at 2/3:30 every day that's a lot of day left to enjoy your living situation. Having lived in LA and Davis before, I'd pick LA for location...although I'm sure there are people out there who think Davis is heaven on earth.

Check out the block schedual. It also doesn't list a required elective that you have to do 4 hours a week on Tuesday or Thursday. Looks like about 27-29 hours + 4 hours elective. And there are some Saturdays you have to interview patients (I think it's like 4 during your first year)

As for the 20K a year, my source on this is as good as you can get.
