Finally, I sent in an email with an essay to USC to notify them the acceptance for the interview on November 12th. The essay that I had to submit took me forever. It took me about a week to finish and finally it's done. What a relief! Anyone had a hard time writing it? When did you send yours in? Remember to send it by November 3rd!!! Good luck!

Yea I'm finishing mine up tonight!! Good luck peeps!!

Hey, did you just send the essay in as an attatchment???

what's this? You have to write an essay just to accept the interview??? 😱

Yeah, a 300 word essay on what you have done to prepare for admission and a career in pharmacy 😳

Now I feel nervous, I didn't spend too much time on the essay. It only took me 3-4hrs to do... 🙁

Dont worry Dragonet you'll be fine. The reason I spent too much time on it was because I kept changing my thoughts. Kept going back and forth on certain things that I wanted them to see.

I submitted mine last night. So far, I haven't got a reply back saying that they got my letter. I'll give them another day.

Baxter81, yeah I submitted mine as an attachement.

TrojanAnteater: yeah this year is the first year that USC is making their selected applicants for the interview to write an additional essay and submit it with a letter of acceptance for an interview. I know it's kinda crazy.

If you are attending USC School of Pharmacy right now, could you ask them why they are doing this? I know that we could use this letter during the interview. But what's the main purpose of this? Is it for the interviewers? Let us know. Thanks

That's kind of weird but a lot of interviews involve an essay so it sounds like you can't get out of the writing part. At least you don't have to do your essay on the spot!

This is just a pre-essay that we have to write. We'll have to write another one on the spot after the interview. But I am sure you already know that.... 🙂

Acura, I'm not really sure who I would go ask who could tell me exactly why they want the applicants to submit this 300 word admission essay. Did you guys have to still do the supplamental application that had a few short response requestions?

I will tell you what I know though that may help you out. As most of you are aware the process of getting selected into pharmacy schools is not only based on GPA. On thing USC makes a big deal about is you have to be an effective communicator- this means oral and written. One of our professors made a big deal in class the other day how great the writing has improved at our school over the last couple decades. Anyway, so don't worry too much about what they are going to do with this little pre-interview essay you turn in. Just make sure you believe whatever it is you are writing so that if somehow it came up in an interview you can talk about it smoothly. However, they probably haven't changed the interview format, so most likely it'll still be closed file, which basically means, they are probably going to take this essay and read it, give you a score for it, put it in their computers, and move on.

One big tip I will give anyone going in for an interview is know some of the issues going on in pharmacy, or the health care system in general (medicare part D etc). A big question could be "what do you think is one of the problems facing pharmacy right now?"

Good luck guys.

Thanks for the tips. I am sure I need it. Basically, everything is the same interms of filling out supplemental application. We had to write essays for the suppl and the one through pharmacas. But I know USC won't look too much on the essay that you wrote for the pharmcas (per PharmD info Session), but they'll read the one that we wrote on the supplemental.

Since the proffs are making a big deal on oral and written comm skills, that's why they are making us write another essay. You're right. This essay will help us more during the interview since we could use it. I'll make three copies of the essay just incase they ask for it during the interview. Overall, I see this pre-essay as a positive thing. I am so close now. I could feel the "Trojan Spirit" everyone is talking about. hahhaha... anywho.... peace out.

i'm not too sure about this...but from what I heard...they are supposed to be comparing your written portion of the interview with the 300 word essay...For consistency purposes. Who knows maybe i'm wrong.

Well that's a possibility. But if you really think about it, I don't think that's it's fair that they are comparing something that you only have about 30 minutes to write (after the interview essay) to the one that you have about a week and a half to write (300 words essay). But then again you could be right. Let's hope not.... 😀

What is everyone wearing to the interview? I just bought a new suit, So I should be stylin!!haha!

I'll be the one in the jeans and wife beater. 😉

In all honesty, I think the point of the written statement is so that the interviewers have SOME idea of who you are when entering. They probably don't have time to read your PS, your ECs, etc etc. So instead, you just had to write a little 300 word summary about yourself. It'll take them like 2 minutes to read it, and based off of that, they can ask you a couple of pointed questions.

I don't think this essay is meant to be compared to whatever it is you have to write for the essay portion of the interview.

Have you guys heard anything on the essay you have to write at the interview? In the past it's just been a little paragraph they give you, and you get like 5 minutes to read it. Then you get like 5 or 10 minutes to write a summary of that paragraph. Did they change it to making you write a whole essay on a given topic this year?

From what I gather, it is the same this year too -- just write a summary. That doesn't sound too bad... 🙂

They should respond right away. Although they'll be getting a lot of letters since the dead line is Nov 3rd. I submitted mine on the Nov 1st. I got the confirmation in 4 hours later. Don't worry about it if you haven't got an acknowledgment from them. They said that they'll call and double check with you before they give your spot out to another applicant.

Actually, from what i understand it is the opposite of what you are thinking. Most people do not apply until the last minute, so I would think that the earliest interview for USC is least competitive....
