trying to set up a cheap 2nd lane in case of overflow.
Any good websites for buy/sell among optometrists/ophthalmologists without going thru middleman?
something like a Marco/Topcon slit lamp and +cyl phoropter

EBay is your friend. If you are patient and careful, there are lots of good deals buying there directly. Slit lamps, tonometers, lensometers, even lasers.

Zeiss slit lamps can be had just as cheaply as Topcon and Marco on the used market. Haag Streit 900s run $4-5K, with the later model clean, used 900BMs going $5000-5500. Phoropters typically run $1600-$2000 clean used for single-banked, minus cyl, probably even less for plus cyl since nobody seems to want them as much anymore.

Direct sales is possible on dot.med, a bulletin board equipment sales website.

If you want to contact companies, try DiG, in Florida, Angelus in California, cal coast ophthalmics in CA and NV, and oii-ca.com also in CA, and St. Louis Eye.

Another good place is liquidation.com and governmentliquidation.com, both of which auction clinical equipment pretty regularly. You need to have a tolerance for risk as they are usually on an "as-is, where-is" basis. You need to arrange pickup and shipping--they tell you how, and with some of the auction houses, you pay an auction premium and state sales taxes. All of that needs to be part of your calculus, including an amount for the risk of repairing something that doesn't work well.

All the same, I have bought near-new Reichert phoropters for $1000 less than typical used equipment dealers would sell them, and I have bought autorefractors and auto-lensometers for less than I would have paid to a used equipment dealer.

thanks for the info.
willing to wait for a good bargain!
