usefullness of iphone/smartphone as first year

I know coolvkb brought up the usefullness of an iphone app for pharmacology during year 2. I was wondering if there is a need/use for an iphone as a first year? Specifically at DMU, where everything is wireless and tablet pcs are provided. Yeah its cool to have an iphone and I will definitely get one 2nd year, but I would have to cancel my contract and get a much more expensive plan (40 more bucks a month) if I did it now. Worth it?

Several students have "smart phones" here at Temple during 1st year. They are cool and have great apps
I don't think you need one for 1st year
save your money and buy a nice laptop instead

My contract comes up this summer, will definitely go with an iphone, can't wait! I can't think of many reasons that I need one, but I can think of a lot of reasons why I want one!

i dont think its necessary at all at DMU since everywhere you go you will be using your laptop. everywhere on campus has wifi, all classrooms have wifi and plug in for ethernet cables.
