So in the last week it was announced the the dean of usf's college of med was being forced to resign. what kind of impact do people think this will have on the medical school, if any?

any current usf students reading this, what's happening down there? anything directly affecting you guys yet?

my interest lies in the fact that i was just accepted there, and i think this might be info relevant to my decision to go there or elsewhere.

First, congrats on your acceptance

I attend USF (MS1) and though I have heard about the issue with the dean, I haven't paid much attention to it. That doesn't mean there might not be problems ahead (I have heard talk that funding for new projects may be affected), but the world is coming to and end and it really shouldn't be a significant factor when deciding whether or not you should attend.

Good Luck

this sounds very serious. the dean was FORCED to resign? why?

Take this with a grain of salt because I am only going by what I have heard in passing, but I believe he had solicited contributions to a political party or organizaiton from staff members. Solicited may be too strong or weak a word, I just don't know.

according to the article my mother sent me from the st. pete times, it's not exactly clear why he was forced to resign. the implication is that he was forced to resign because he had asked coworkers to contribute to a state congressional member's campaign. to be honest, i don't really care why it happened, i'm just interested in the effect, if any, it will have on the medical school.

At the end of the day, he was just an interim dean. They have needed to find a permanent dean from the day he came out of retirement to act as interim dean. Either way, whether he was forced to resign or not, isn't really an issue. The school has the stats, the students, and the program to back up the fact that it is a great school. Dont' let the actions of one person cloud your judgment over the 'quality' of the school.

What I have heard is the same as the above posters. It actually is no big deal from the standpoint of a student. Yes there will be some administrative problems occuring as they search for a new dean, but this is nothing that will affect any of the students. Things will run just as if nothing ever happened. I bet there are a few people who never even saw the dean and have no idea what he looks like. If you decide USF is the school for you, do not let such a minor issue (yes its minor from a studnets perspective) sway you from your choice. I would be more concerned about the curriculum, studnet happiness, residency spots, the amount of clinical exposure you get, and where this exposure takes place. Goodluck
