USF in Tampa Florida?

The USF program will continue to take residents, although I would expect that being on probation will tend to make it less competitive than it would be otherwise.. The ACGME website states it's approved for a total of 45 residents, The program will be reviewed by the ACGME again around March '05, at which time in a worst-case scenario they could lose their accreditation.
As to the why, that is a good question. As best I can tell, ACGME does not that information public record. The USF anesthesiology website is certainly no help, either; it makes no mention of the fact that it is even on probation.

In interviewed at USF last year and I believe the reason they are on probation is because of the attending to resident ratio thus the lack of attending supervision in the OR. It was very evident on the interview day that the attendings did not care about the interviewing candidates. I did not even rank this program. I remember sitting in a little room for 30 minutes by myself wondering when someone was going to come get me for the interview. I thought this was extremely unprofessional. One of the attendings asked me if I had any questions and when I asked the questions I had he did not know any of the answers and stated he spent most of his time at the VA. There are so many other good programs in the south, there is no need to goto a program like this. UF is a great program and even Miami is better than USF. All I know is that I would hate to match at USF and then a year latter be scrambling for a residency slot because the programs accreditation was pulled. Something to think about.

I was told that many of the physicians left and thanks for letting me know most of the time is spent at the VA, that place is terrible.
Some of my family members are in Tampa and this is the reason I was considering. 😎
I am applying this year for Anthes, EM, and Surgery. I have heard the surgery program with USF is also pretty bad.

I am at Mayo and we have 2-3 residents from USF calling to transfer to us. One of our CA-2s just transferred from USF and says they have MAJOR problems. I am inclined to believe her because many of her colleagues are calling programs throughout the South, seeking transfer. I think she said things were taught incorrectly and they had very little supervision.

I like my program very much. It seems to be a great place albeit one with some growing pains. We are the inaugural class so they are still working on organizing everything, but we are doing well. I picked it because it is a great location, it has the Mayo name as well as resources from the other 2 sites, we have some big name people working there who are actually not too aloof (Murray, Cucchiara, Brull, Dorsch, Feinglass and others), and we get a pretty good amount of individual attention. Our call schedule is pretty sweet too. With the exception of critical care (q4), we pretty much take call 3 times per month. 1 weekend day and two weekdays. Can't really beat that. Yes, I'd say we're pretty happy overall. I am used to the growing pains of a new program as I experienced a new curriculum as a med student.
I assume you are at UF? How is that? Although large I hear it's likewise a pretty good place to be.

MS 4 here at UF. They've done some fantastic student-recruiting here.
UF is big, and...exciting? I was there one morning while there was an intraoperative code (recovered successfully), incoming peds liver transplant, and a woman rushed back from SICU w/ ruptured AAA. Each time I'm down there, it seems rather...exciting.
Chairman and PD are tippity-top notch, downright inspirational. Mayo though seems to have some pretty nice things to offer as well, in talking with some faculty.
What do you think of your caseload?

From what I understand it is about average. My CA-2s ended up doing about 650-800 cases over the course of the year. We have some excitement here, but I doubt we have the volume UF has. We are big on liver transplants, I believe the 3rd largest center in the US. I am just finishing my first 2-month rotation on ENT and am off to general for the next 2 months. Pretty decent cases and I know a buttload more now than I did the first week. Learning curve is VERY steep the first year.
