Hi all-

I'm interested in the SMP program at University of South Florida. Are there any students out there who went through it that can shed some light on the program (rigor, preparation for medical school, quality, etc.)? Do they guarantee any acceptance into med school at USF? Also, when is the optimal time to apply (aka, not too early...)?

Thanks for the help!

Well I am applying now and to be honest with you there is no such thing as to early. Keep in mind USF has two types of programs:MSBS and IMS. The MSBS is a soft, psuedo smp where you take similar classes to medical students. This does not give you as strong of a comparison to current med students and really USF doesn't seem to accept to many of them into the college of medicine. the other is the IMS which is a class SMP where you take medical school class right along side med students. This is a great comparison and USF takes most of these guys into its medical school while most of the rest get into other state schools.Something to keep in mind is this word "guarantee" no school guarantees anything however it is to the schools benefit to take the best scoring IMSer and MSBSer into there medical school for obvious reasons. Do not look for a guarantee but an opportunity.

There are some other threads out there that can tell you more about the program if you search for it.

Thanks for your input! I would definitely be interested in the IMS program. I meant 'guarantee' in the sense that a few programs (not many) guarantee enrollment if you make a certain GPA in the program.

Only one that I know of... Temple. Everyone else may guarantee an interview. Look into it this way, apply to the programs you fit then sort it out based on the number of people that complete the program that get into the corresponding medical school. Watch out for catches. Some of the best on the list are U cinni, temple, EVMS, and U Tol in terms of direct entry. Georgetown gets the most people into medical school although this is a bit more indirect as most people end up going to their state schools. USF IMS and MSBS gets alot of people into school in florida ( FSU seems to like these guys quite a bit). Boston U MSBS is does a good job as well of indirectly getting people into. Wayne state and Tufts have mixed results really so they are a bit more on the meh scale. All of the DO school programs are awesome at getting people into DO schools and sometimes MD schools although most peeps are sold and stay in the DO realm. Psuedo SMP programs ( or type 2) like MC have good results for people in the area but nationally not so much.( Good if you want to go to UMC) Barry seems to be getting quite a few people into FIU however many of these people have strong MCAT and ok UG grades. VCU gets people into VCU, EVMS or U Virg but there is always a gap year. If I were you pick your top 7 and apply to them then post on here your choices and talk it out with us and your family.

Thanks! I am a SC resident, but I don't particularly want to move away and come back and try to get in again and have to worry about getting a job, etc. after. My family is moving to FL, which is why I'm interested in USF and trying to get FL residency, if that was possible. Either that or Touro-NY because I'd be interested in moving there and going to school at Touro. Georgetown is competitive and would be a great opportunity but I don't think my stats would get me in :/.

I applied before the priority deadline and the acceptance/denial comes this Friday latest Monday! I called 😀 Good luck everyone

I got accepted into the MSBS program (the lady told me over the phone) and from there I had my application forwarded to the IMS program as well. Still waiting to hear back from the IMS program. I feel much relief knowing I got into the MSBS program.
I have a question for you all... I am a Texas resident... will going either of these programs increase my chances of getting accepted into FL medical schools? @WorldChanger36 you seem to know a lot about the stats of these schools.. 🙂
Well no. Your best shot is back home in Texas. Don't give up a great state like that. Out of the Florida schools that accept out of stater they are locking for awesome stats and/or instate ties ( family, former resident, married into the state). If you want to become a Florida resident it will take an extra year of staying in the state outside of school. Americorp would also be a good help.

@WorldChanger36 so if I got into the IMS program, you would recommend I still choose UNT HSC masters program in Texas over it? Even though the IMS is simulation of year 1 and quite selective whereas UNT is essentially the same as the MSBS masters at USF
It depends. The IMS will very likley get you into USF but talk about that when you have something to talk about. You got into the MSBS so again no it will not increase your chances of getting into a Florida school if you remain a Texas resident. You have a better shot to get into a medical school if you either 1) Complete the MSBS then after finishing apply to med school with Texas as your home state and go back to Texas 0r 2) Stay in Florida an additional year after the MSBS ( while you apply to med school, with Florida as your home state) while you work in some kind of charity program or something that show to commitment to being in the state while earning a wage in the state. You can see option two is much more difficult and I doubt will change you chances of getting into a medical school overall thus gives you no advantage. Option 1 is your best and most reasonable shot and with option 1 you can still apply to a few Florida schools and maybe just maybe land an interview and get in. UF, UCF, FIU, UM, and USF are your best shots option 1.
