I was wondering if anybody had any thoughts on my situation that may help me. I have worked for years for my step-dad(who is a dentist) in his dental lab, thus getting a LOR from him would strengthen my application. However in the application it states not to have a LOR from immediate family... I know that with differing last names I could technically use the letter without issue. However then I would not be able to list him for the family members that are in the dentistry section on the application or for my personal statement.

Which route do you feel would be most beneficial?

Hmmmm...this MIGHT not be good. I'd call the schools and ask them.

Do not use your step-father dentist as a evaluator.

I have sent an email to a professor on adcom at a school to see what he recommends. Thanks for the quick replies, the situation just sucks as I would be unable to use a LOR from where I have my best and most experience, but at the same time I can understand why I shouldn't.

Can you have one of his colleagues write it?

It's better to list him under family.

This is exactly what I'm leaning towards. It seems to be the best option. Thanks!
It will just take some work as the other dentist in the practice happens to be my uncle. So I will have to get it from his other office.

Why is it better to list him under family? Wouldn't it be better to have a strong LOR?
