I scored around 200 on Step 1 and would really like to do better on Step 2. I want it to take it early enough programs to see that I have improved. When is the latest that I could take it? I was thinking around late August or Mid September?

Also, I did not take Kaplan for Step 1 and now wonder if I should for Step 2. Does any one feel Kaplan helped their score significantly? Thanks.

I also am in the same situation (step 1 around 200) but many of my friends who went to good gas programs this year said not to take step 2 yet. They simply stated it is not worth taking the risk of doing worse. The trend is that people who do better simply get an average of 10 points or better. It is very hard to do exceptionally well, and a few percentage of people do significantly better than there step 1. In addition, if you do worse you have to report the score because it will tag along with your step 1 score when you submit your information to schools. Its hard to explain a lower score on step 2, that it is to tell them you haven't taken it yet. In addition, all most all the programs my friends interviewed never even asked for a step 2 score. GAs is competive but not as competitive as every one likes to make its out to be. welcome for questions and comments and contrary beliefs.

😕

When I interviewed I was asked about my step 2 score at about half the programs I interviewed at.

Will improving my step 2 score increase my chances at interviewing and matching at top-tier gas programs? I would really like to match somewhere in the west coast.

I didn't apply to the west coast, but I have heard that those programs are pretty competitive in general, with a 200 or so you won't get into a top tier program on the west coast. I don't mean to bum you out but with a 200 you probably won't even get interviews with top tier programs. And on the west coast I think even average programs will be very hard to get with a 200. i would suggest you take the step 2 very soon, and do v well if you are shooting for top tier programs in general, or even decent programs on the west coast.

As for when to take the step 2, you need to take it, and have the score in BEFORE your application reaches the programs, because your step 1 score won't meet the cutoffs for the programs you seem to be shooting for, and they won't take a second look your app when the step 2 score comes in. If you take it in mid september, then score won't be in till mid october, so that will be earliest you can send in the app. Thats getting a bit late, but not really too much.

I didn't watch any kaplan tapes if that is what you are asking, but I did you their review books and questions and I highly recomend them. Study hard, the step 2 is easy to pass, but hard to ace. You need to shoot for at least average.

Not trying to be harsh here, but with a 200 you probably will not even get any interviews on the west coast period. Unless you are from a west coast school or are a resident of a state out there. Not trying to be mean, but everyone wants to go out there. I know many people with better numbers than that, who wanted to go out west. Most didnt even get interviews. They were from mid tier, state MD schools. But if you really want to go, you might as well try to get the interviews out west.

Thanks for the replies. I will plan on taking step 2 in early August. Does anyone know whether gas programs average step1 and step 2?

Well, I guess that varies program to program. Some might take an average and create a cutoff for the average, but the problem is that most people don't have a step 2 in by the time the apps are initially reviewed, so some programs might just use step 1 as a cutoff point. Thats where you would run into problems, even if u do do very well on step 2.

If they have an actual person look at each app and look at both scores before giving interviews they will probably look more at your step 2 score, since it i thought to be much better indicator of clinical ability. Whether any programs do this, i don't know.

Once you get an interview at a program though, if you have a good step 2 score, most people will disregard the step 1 score as a fluke. But your step 1 score will pose a problem getting interviews even if u do well at step 2, especially at cali programs that have a large # of apps and probably don't look at each too closely. (This is not to say you shouldn't take step 2, I still think it is important for you to take step 2, otherwise you will have a hard time getting a decent program anywhere)

To help score interviews in cali I would sugest away electives at these programs, that will proabbly land you courtesy interviews at the least, and then your step 2 could enter the pictures. Don't go for away's at the top cali programs like stanford or ucla, shoot for more realistic programs in cali, unless you are certain you can ace the step 2 with a 230+.

I am in a similar situation, but I go to a top West Coat school. Is taking Step 2 still necessary if I want to stay in California?

I think you do. When deciding on who to pick residency directors might give some favor to your being a residency director, but i doubt the lower their usmle cutoffs for cali residents, and even if they did they would lower it to 200. They probably have people with 220+ applying all from around the country, and even from cali itself.

If you want to stay in cali, then you need to take step 2 and do well

What's considered doing "well" on Step 2? Assuming I scored around 200 on step 1?

THis same question has been beaten over n over in many diferent threads
