Usmle

This report just came out this month. Thought it might be important for MD/PhD students since changes in the USMLE may take place in the next 4 years, when most people starting now will still be working on their PhD. I don't spend much time at this web site so this was all new to me.

I would agree if there was something in this document that address that change one way or the other. I see nothing in there that discusses it. I just would have hoped that if you posted it you would have some posted some sort of summary for us with it.

But that's ok 🙂 I'm not mad or anything like that.

Yes you are...that corgi is going to run the OP over (as is typical of most philly drivers)!

They won't run you over. You just have to play chicken with them. After a few months you get used to being almost run over everytime you cross an intersection. I particularly enjoy the one just on the west side of the Walnut St bridge.

I guess I have had to jump out of the way of a car a couple times, but that's just cause they weren't paying attention. 😱

I didn't bother to read through the link. However, in a testment to the OP, I have heard a lot of rumblings about combining Step 1 and 2 into a single exam which would be referred to as a Gateway Exam. I heard it would be taken sometime during the end of the M3 year. Also, it may be slated for the entering class in Fall 2010, which would graduate in May 2014. Thus, it is quite possible that some of us who have or will just take Step 1 and take 8 years or longer will graduate and apply to residency with a class that have not taken Step 1 rather a completely different exam. How we will be grandfathered in...I have no idea. It is interesting to thinking about. I have heard this from a number of sources...and most quite reliable.

Yeah, there have been a lot of rumblings. I've heard from a pretty reliable source that they're not combining them for the class of 2010. A bunch of MD/PhD directors got together and yelled at the NBME for trying to diminish the importance of basic science in medical education. So I believe they're holding off on combining them at least for now. They may end up doing it eventually, but I certainly hope it's after I have to take step 2. I sure as hell don't want to do a semi-repeat of step 1 when I go back to third year.

The tidbit on entering class of 2010...yeah I think I heard that in April, so things definately may have changed since then. I think the possible de-emphasis on basic science is a concern. Intereing to consider how this may eventually affect curriculum...regardless of how much school protest they don't "teach to the test."
