Can somebody tell me how is USMLEWorld organized? Does it offer the option of systemic/subject approach or it is just a lot of questions organized in blocks like the real test?
Thank you

Similar to qbank. You can create blocks of questions, either randomly or according to subjects or systems. Basically, you can do the questions however you prefer, which is nice.

Either. It is the same organizational format as kaplan's qbank, but with the look of the real exam. Fewer questions but a lot lower price.

Thank you for answering. I'm taking Step 1 early next year, but want to know when to do questions. To those that already took the exam, How you do the questions while studying? by subject? After studied all?
Thank you.

I did random tests with all subjects while studying specific subjects.

That might seem dumb, but by doing that I was accomplishing 4 things:

1) Reviewing what I had learned and keeping it all fresh
2) Learning new things by reading answer explanations
3) Integrating and applying my knowledge across several subjects
4) Learning how to answer questions about topics I didn't know much about (which will happen on the real thing no matter how much you study)

I didn't worry too much about what % I was scoring on USMLEWorld because I wasn't using the % to "predict my score" - I used the NBME and the free 150q's for that.

The problem I found with doing it by subject is that as you approach the exam, you won't have any "unused" questions left in certain subjects, and by the end of your studying, if you don't do them mixed, you are going to be forgetting the early subjects as weeks are passing since you looked at them. And when you do blocks of 50 later on, either you won't have any of that subject left "unused", or your score will be artificially high because you will be doing blocks with things mixed in that you've already done before. One option is the sign up for both UWorld and Qbank and do one by subject and the other mixed. The other is to do problems mixed all along, so you always have a balanced grouping to test yourself on throughout the process. Hope that makes more sense than I think it does.

That is good advice. I was wondering the same thing. 🙂

I used Kaplan qbank for subject based tests while reviewing and then used USMLEworld for random tests when I was ready for them. This method works well if you can get both.

Thanks for giving the reasons especially #4.

I am also taking USMILE next year. Since I did not get any honors or HP in my first year medical school courses it is reallly imporant for me to do well in USMLE especially because i want to be a radiologist. Anyway, I want to start now but I dont know how. Should I use usmile world questions or Kaplan questions?? what is the difference?? Right now I am doing microbiology, so should I only do micro questions.

Thanks.

You don't want to start the qbanks a year prior to the test IMHO. You do them during the 6 weeks before the test. It costs too much to get these banks for a year in advance -- most people get a couple of months at most.

I bought and used Kaplan Qbank during my entire second year of medical school. By doing each section as I took the corresponding course, I managed to finish most of it before my serious board review. For the two months I reviewed before the actual test I did all the USMLE World questions. This two hit process may have been expensive but every board point is worth at least $500 to me.

If you can afford it and you want to do as well as possible, get a qbank to work on through during the year. Save Uworld for the end tho.

Pinkertinkle,

I just want to say that I ADORE your advice. You're so honest, it's refreshing. I think I actually hang on your every word (okay don't mean to sound creepy) but seriously, I'm pretty nervous about this year and I just want to thank you so far for all the help you've given me. I'll be asking for your advice every step of the way.

Thanks!

haha thanks, I'm always happy to answer questions.

Hey Pinkertinkle, So
you think I should presecribe to Kaplan Qbank for an entire year?

And why do u say save the Uworld questions at the end?

I can actually get Uworld for an entire year sheap for only 349, I hear they have more explinations.

Last question I like to to do problems on book, so would it be okay to buy Kaplan
qbook ??

how do you have time to do those problems while studying for courses at the same time?

all of those out there who are helping us second year med students thank a loot.

Because I believe USMLE World to be the better question bank and thus saving it for later allows you to retain more knowledge you learn from it when you are taking the test. You are right that it has longer explanations, thats one of the reasons I like it more. You can buy kaplan qbook but it not the same as having a real qbank. It would only be a supplement.

When ppl say I did 60% of Kaplan questions or 60% USMILE world questions?? do they mean they did 60% of Kaplan 2200 questions or that they got 60% right?? Do people usually do allll Kaplan or USMILE world questions, I mean is that even possible.
