I wanted to start this thread and try to see if there are any Fil-Ams from the
U.S. that will be attending UST this year as an incoming freshman.

Transitioning from the States to the PI can be quite an experience for some,
in terms of education and background. If anyone has any questions as to what to expect or prepare for to make the transition a little bit easier, please
feel free to ask any questions.

I'm trying for this year, however; I'm also applying to a joint CMU/NYMC 5 year program right now through Beth Healthcare. If it falls through, I'm taking the NMAT in LA this November and putting in apps for UERM, UST and maybe a couple others, although I'm pretty sure I'd pick UERM over the rest..

The reason for this is that I've contacted UST and verified that their clinical director only allows 2 weeks of U.S. rotations max, while UERM has affiliated hospitals in NY and Chicago for a guaranteed year (2/3 of all residencies require at least 1 whole year of rotation in the U.S., this was just mandated around 2009, it's not a preference, but a requirement)

Although I would rather go to UST, for its culture and Alumni network, It's not a viable option for me since I just need the best chances to get matched in the U.S. I will contact them again soon to re-verify the 2 week thing, but that's what they told me.

Are you in Los Angeles? If I don't get admitted to the program I'm applying to now, I'll be seeing you at the NMAT administration if you take it at LA (assuming so since you're name is Glendale, and that you haven't taken NMAT yet since you're about to apply).

[EDIT] mybad. Just saw your previous posts, you're already starting this June!! that's awesome. Would you happen to know the details about the 2 week allowance for outside rotations? It's something that I was going to inquire about in more detail.

I know that this is a bit off topic but you guys obviously has done more research and have more experience with this process. Did you have to pay for the international fee being that you have finished your undergraduate from a foreign country?

Yes, if you finish your undergraduate degree in a foreign country, you must pay the international fee for UST, regardless of your citizenship.

I am currently a 2nd year med student at UST. One Filam who graduated from UST 2 years ago was able to do a full year of rotations in the US after his 3rd year of med school, but afterwards he had to come back and finish his last year of clerkship in order to graduate. So yes, it is possible but you have to get permission from the dean, which shouldn't be a problem at all. You would just be delayed an extra year.

Oh, wow. That's surprising.. I really want to go to UST, but I missed the NMAT date this year, and I have to wait until Nov. to take it (here in LA), meaning I can't start until next June. I'm currently looking into a program right now, but if my plans fall through, UST for sure.

I'll take your word for it, and call them for more details later. Thanks!

Well if you like I can give you this particular person's contact info and he can tell you more about how he did it. He actually just got into a surgery residency in the US recently and I'm sure he'd be happy to answer your questions. Send me a private message if interested.

Hi doc.
Sorry if this is not related to your post but

WOW you just graduated and leaving for the US already -- have you gotten a match for your residency?

Did you take USCE while being in UST?

When did you take your USMLE steps?

Hope you don't mind my asking... Thank you so much

What are the benefits of going to UST? Why did you choose to a school that requires you to take an additional year off then come back to complete clerkship compared to Fatima that allows you to do your rotations on the US the 4th year? I understand that UST has better facilities and a better reputation, but how has it benefited you so far? I'm debating on going to UST vs Fatima. Also how difficult is it set up a rotation in the US?

I dont know too much info.. but from what I heard, Fatima isnt really a good school... they said your reputation goes down when people find out you graduated from fatima... other than that, I personaly know someone who graduated from there, class of 2006 or 07, and until now he has not passed USMLE step 1..

as far as UST, ever since I was a child I have heard of this school, and actually the first heart transplant surgery that was performed in the Philippines graduated from there and is now one of the top doctors in Washington, DC and from what I know, his son also graduated in UST and is now an attending vascular surgeon. Also many other Filipino doctors here are UST alumni's, UE, and FEU.
